L plate Welder

Hi Guys, just need to ask a question, i'm a pretty much "hands on" type of guy, i'll have a go at anything and so far i've become pretty good at most things, Like refurbishing the top end of a Clio, replacing the water pump on a Shogun (if you have one you know what a B***h of a job it is,

Now i come up against my last nemesis, welding. (I cracked spraying last year and now have a small spray booth with piped air from a compressor.) i suppose i left this till last 'cos i think i'll be cr*p at it, tried some arc/stick welding 20 years ago, not to impressed. so before i start a practice regime, i would like to know how long (roughly) would it take someone like me to get up to a level that would be considered "okay" for most jobs, i have an imminent job of plug welding where pots were, and possibly seam weld the rest.

Richard welcome to the mad house lol

Get yourself a good mig welder 1st and foremost.

2nd take time to practice practice practice practice practice practice practice practice practice practice practice practice practice practice think you get the point lol it will get easier and you will find lots of uses for the mig around the workshop.

they may be a local night class at your local tech to get the basics . like msmbus2000 said . buy a quality welder with copper transformer and quality wire feed , euro torch fitting because if you buy ****e you may be put off forever , now i know a bad workman always blames his tools , but where migs a concerned believe me there are plenty of bad tools about . avoid hobby migs and glassless migs . and practice on old exhausts and thin scrap panels horizontal and vertical . you will learn fast enough , its all about controlling the weld bead . they may be some videos on youtube .
