Sneaking up is anything but a thing of the past. It's just other things are issued that are more "effective"Nice collection the handle on the one I made is brass and should have been knurled but I ribbed it instead.
He said they used to knock off the brass bit on the end of the scabbard to allow any water to run out.
this was made as a one off, at the request of my friend. I believe some of the later ones had a cheaper cast handle? The blade I forged from a car spring I did slightly broaden the tang at the hilt to strengthen it up. The end of the tang was annealed to allow the nut to be riveted over.
I believe that with the change in combat methods that they are no longer issued as close combat weapons "sneaking up is mainly a thing off the past ". It is a shame that people have to fight and I thank all who have fought for me and mine.
