I'm never one to stand in the way of invention and have often made solutions to problems that only exist in my own mind, but in this case I can't help thinking if you had spent as long as it took practising with a decent axe as it took to make the tool... you wouldn't need the tool.
Its definitely worth practising and generally for splitting kindling, just find the grain and the wood only needs the slightest tap really.
