Mrs RnB has one of these, a 2013 model. It's been mostly fine over the last 18 months we've had it, apart from one issue which sounds very similar to the OP's.
There is no drive to the rear wheels. I only discovered this once we'd had it 6 months, trying to pull a horse trailer out of a muddy field. The 'diff lock' button on the dash lights up when pressed, but did nothing else.
No warning lights anywhere and it drives fine apart from that. I did have a look underneath just now and the propshaft is still there.
The next suspect on the list seems to be the electronic clutch on the front of the rear diff. You can get rebuild kits but I want to try and narrow it down a bit further first.
To investigate any further it looks like I'll have to get all four corners up on axle stands, and probably some better diagnostic kit than my cheapy Bluetooth OBD adapter. Anybody else had one of these apart?

Requirements were 2½ ton towing capacity, not ruinously expensive on fuel, under £7k and had to pass the Mrs RnB acceptance test. Actually I think that last one was top of the list
Audi a6 allroad is about the only vehicle that springs to mind with that towing capacity that isn’t a large suv / 4x4 type car.
I remember looking at those several years ago, very quickly found issues with the transfer box and only looked at xe models. Then you read about the fuel tank paint coming away and blocking the fuel filter, amongst other minor issues. Safe to say I avoided those and bought a Nissan terrano instead. Which has been 100% reliable apart from a bit of rust to deal with… although not particularly great on fuel either

It averages 42 mpg unloaded, that drops to 25 with the horse trailer behind it which is to be expected. Towing miles are only a few hundred a year so it's not too bad overall.
Never bought a 4WD before and looks like we did get stung, but how many dealers would let you rag it round a field as part of a test drive?

Mine's a 2005 XE with 140,000 on the clock. Just passed it's MOT with advisory on "slight corrosion in sills". That is being very generous! (I'm on a welding forum so not bovered!)
