Kia Ce-ed won’t start reliably

A friend of ours has Kia Ce-ed. Recently it died on her, she called the AA. The guy gave it a once over, couldn’t get it to start until he used some sort of ‘easy start‘ spray.
Since then the car won’t start. She’s had her regular mechanic look at it but he says he doesn’t know what’s wrong. I’d go and look at it myself but she’s in Cheshire and we’re in Bedfordshire. My query is does anyone know if this a known problem with Ce-Ed’s I also know that remote diagnosis of car problems is virtually impossible but any suggestions would be welcome.

if it starts ok on easy start sounds fuel related but without codes no idea

Deffo use a code reader, dirt cheap nowadays. Had a problem with my Pug not starting, duff temp sensor and dodgy battery, replaced both and problem cured.

A generic Bluetooth code reader and good app (I use Car Scanner) will get some codes out - diagnosed misfire caused by coilpack on a 2009 C'eed

Is it a petrol or diesel Ceed?

Petrol ones suffer with coilpacks and petrol pump failures - fast Proceed ones suffer with vac boost solenoids. Diesel Kia Ceeds suffer with HP pumps leaking seals into chain case (rising oil level and non start).

Doing a camchain and pump on Diesel Ceed is an evil job - getting pump sprocket off needs a special tool - not a job I ever want to do again.

I did put a new engine in a Kia Proceed (fast one) last summer - not a bad job.

Diesel Kia Ceeds are an awful car.

Thanks for the reply Premmington it’s a petrol model. I’ve passed so we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

OH has a 2011 Kio Rio 1.4 petrol. Its often had the habit of not starting 1st turn - if it doesn't fire straight away there's no point in cranking it.... but try again & it'll fire right up.
Waiting a few seconds after turning on the ignition seems to reduce the incidence of 1st-time fails.
I have no idea whatsoever why - and other than this foible the car has run as it should for the 4-ish years we've had it.

You are not far wrong...

Crank position sensor gives these symptoms.

Our old one went to the dealer and a couple of independants at great cost, no one could tell us whats wrong. Many parts replaced then refunded, but not the labour!!
Crank position sensor, and an incorrectly fitted gasket were mentioned but the problem was always intermittent. Leave it a while or a day and it would start first time.
RAC also stung us for a battery when there was nothing wrong with the old one. Still using the old in garage for lights, air pump and starting stuff.

Mechanically good cars I think but I think they have some designed intermittent failure in the loom or somewhere impossible to diagnose with any sanity.

Had the same thing with an i10. Check if the immobiliser light on the dash goes out when you crank it. Could be that.

It's having an identity crisis, it thinks it's a diesel

I've been reasonably lucky but can see exactly where you are coming from.

My lad is sorting his apprenticeship out now and I do wonder if I should have steered him down a different route but he loves being on the tools.

Normally around year 20 to 25 it starts getting less enjoyable I've found!.

I don't work on cars these days, but mend EFI quads, and they won't fire up until the fuel pump and ICAV have stopped whiring and clanking, it takes about 4 secs. Try before all has gone quiet and they won't start as a rule, try again and they do.

Everyone has a mate or a mate of a mate who’s an amateur mechanic. Can be a race to the bottom.

At least with heavy stuff you’re working for people who are forced to do it properly. It’s also good skills to transfer with - abroad, offshore or whatever.
