Cool idea, but I would make it out of a softer metal such as brass, so not to damage the knurling on the chuck.

Or something like this? There is another type with leather strap and a heel. Which I've just decided to buy.Cool idea, but I would make it out of a softer metal such as brass, so not to damage the knurling on the chuck.

Me tooI have used stilsons in anger for the this job![]()
We all haven't got your vise-like grip.Saw that in my feed too. Interesting idea but overengineered for the task. Defeats the object of having a keyless chuck too.
I don't agree. I've had one lock up when tapping. An Albrecht chuck doesn't need it.

Tapping with a keyless chuckI don't agree. I've had one lock up when tapping.
Cue thick rag and slip-joint Knipex with the back gear engaged.
Another "me too" here before I took the bl**dy thing off, hurled it across the workshop and resorted back to keyed chuck.Me too![]()
Tapping with a keyless chuck
Animal I wouldn't dream of doing such a thing![]()
If only I had a 2MT collet chuck...The quickest way to muller a keyless chuck is to tap with it. In 30 years of toolmaking, the only time keyless chucks have given problems, is after some numpty has tapped with it.Use a collet chuck for tapping.
Or you buy a chinglish one that hadn't been greased and was full of grit...It was from either RDG or Chronos (not cheap)If only I had a 2MT collet chuck...
After a lifetime of nipped fingers from badly fitting keys, I haven't got a single keyed one in use. I strip the keyless chucks ,clean and molylube. If you need a vice like grip to operate it, then something is amiss.
I don't use keyless largely because I haven't got one and I haven't got one because I don't want a cheap one. If (as I suspect) you need to throw a fair bit of money at the problem (whatever the "problem" with having to use a key) then I'd probably throw the money at something else.
Moot point for me because I now have a lifetime supply of Jacobs chucks to play with thanks to @Gavlar.
