Did you give the paint in the tin a good mix up as decent quality 2k paint should of covered easily with even just 2 coats. What make was it ???
You get what you pay for in paint, the well known makes are far superior in coverage and hold up way longer.
The paint was shaken in the tin for a few minutes, then stirred throughly once the lid was off.
Apparently it's a max Meyer mix they use at nu agene, however the tins are generic.
If I try another test panel and still have problems I better get in touch with the shop.

Yellow is well known for being difficult to get coverage with.
I just did some green basecoat using ppg paint that took a good 4 or 5 coats to cover.

Try it without adding thinners, as i'm guessing the paints overly thin to start with.
Cheers for all the comments guys, I went into the paint shop (with another test panel to show him) and explained what's happening.
Apparently this colour HAS to be sprayed over a white primer. So I've whipped the white high build out and I'll try and get an arch sprayed over the next few days for comparison.

IMO the colour of the primer should not make a difference, as you still want full paint coverage whatever primer your using, by using a lighter coloured primer the paint will appear to have covered better, but basically your tricking yourself into thinking you've got good coverage when in fact you haven't , its just harder to tell.
I'm just repeating what the paint shop owner said to me. As a beginner home painter I do not have the experience to know.
I've got 5 litres of this mix......is it worth getting a litre from somewhere else to see if there is a difference?
All I've heard is that the particular paint is very transparent. If anyone can access anything to shed some more light for me it's VW code LL1F (aa yellow).
Oh, and I think it's ICI system they are using now at Nu Agene, not max Meyer as originally thought.

NuAgain have always been helpful and honest with me really. There are worse places to use round this way 
One that supplies our odd mixed paint at work is terrible!
I use different primer colours for different colour wheels at work, my Veyron orange wheels were very difficult to do. Did a test over grey and it looked rubbish, the paint supplier for that product said it needed to be a white base. That worked fine in the end, oddly enough I was speaking to car painter the other day and he was saying to get Ferrari red to match you have to go over white..
