I have a kerry drillmaster pillar drill, and would like to replace the chuck.
Does anyone know how to go about replacing it? I can't see a slot to release the machine taper of it has one
not to sure on piller drills but assume there must be a taper or slot to hold the chuck in its posistion as well the screw ? so will need some force to remove but im sure you will get a bit more feed back from someone thats uses one all the time soon
If there's no screw inside the chuck, Chances are that it is mounted on a male taper on the end of the spindle.
If so you will need to apply some pressure between the bottom of the spindle and the back of the chuck, useing some wedges or a ball joint splitter type tool. Then it will need a shock from a soft face hammer or pice of wood. But you will need to be cautious not to damage the spindle bearings, directing all forces downward.
You're probably right about the male taper on the end of the quill fitting straight into the chuck, (some versions of?) the Progress No1 have this arrangement.
I have the same drill it has a slot to insert a drift to dislodge the chuck aprox 4 inches above the chuck. If it doesn't have this the chuck is held on by a short taper. A sharp tap on the top of the chuck should dislodge it, If that doesn't work a pair of taper wedges can be used often for sale on Ebay
With Jacob drill chucks (well certainly mine) the model number of the chuck tells you it's size AND it's fitment. As I was unsure whether mine was held by a taper (not more type) or screwed on to spindle. Mine turned out to be the Jacobs (?) taper and I used 2 thinish open ended spanners, one from each side and tapped to make them wedge out the chuck. Note if it is screwed on to a spindel thread then I think it use to be, insert chuck key in it's hole and tap it round to drive chuck to undo.
