Slightly suspicious that the only garages listed so far are both in west Norfolk what are the locals running their cars on

Been years since I tipped out any red diesel from a customers fuel filter in my garage.

About early 2000's we saw allot of this going on - but to be honest - I don't think I seen any "red" in a car in my workshop for 20yrs mate.

I have no idea how much Red Derv or Kero is at the pump - would guess 80p a ltr...?

I sometimes buy a few 20ltr cans of Kero for space heaters - but not done that for a few years.

79p inc. the 5% vat for purchases less than 2300L.

HMRC have got very good at detecting it with roadside lab-in-a-van equipment, and then extracting eye watering amounts of money from offenders, I imagine that news of that sort of action gets around pretty fast.

I remember them pulling up outside our house in a LWB Landy with a lab on the back in the 70's to ask my dad if they could test the fuel in his Landy.

The supplier I use for kerosene takes a note of my registration number every time I'm in, and asks what it's for.
I think legally they have to, and shouldn't supply kero/red to anybody they suspect is misusing it, otherwise they can get penalised for it.

I suspect for most garages with pumps, it's probably just not worth the cost/risk supplying it now, especially from a forecourt pump.

Declining market as well.

With the increasing restrictions locking out agricultural contractor's vehicles and construction plant, there's less and less users who are going to want it in a forecourt setting rather than having a tank of their own.

Given many older fuel stations are also becoming subject to requirements to update their underground tanks to maintain their licences, why would you spend a big wodge of cash on updating a tank that's barely getting used, when you could either add an extra white diesel pump for the same money, or take it out of service for a fraction of the price?

I suspect by the time all fuel stations have been upgraded, we will reach a point where you have to drive to the depot of a supplier to buy red diesel.

Back in the 70's my dad sometimes had problems finding (white) diesel for his Landy as it was mostly used in commercials so few petrol stations had a diesel pump, I've been with him when he had to join a queue of black cabs waiting to fill up.

I remember in the early 90's my dad inherited my granddad's Montego Diesel.

We'd regularly have to queue for ages in a chain of lights vans, for the one diesel pump at the one petrol station in town, whilst they had 10 other pumps selling Four Star and Unleaded...

When LRP finally disappeared in 2003, suddenly we didn't have to queue to fill up his 406, as there were 10 extra pumps selling diesel.

What exactly is ‘red’ DERV? Sounds a bit like an oxymoron to me!

All road vehicles must use DERV - and a lot of site vehicles, too.

Red diesel is a tax-rebated fuel for limited use these days.

Very limited use agri and fishing only now I think. I filled a jerry can for a neighbour yesterday for his shed heater.

There's two just off J30 of the M1, just over the Notts-Derbyshire Border, but it would be a ½ hr detour for OP on his way up to York.

The JET just off the motorway does Red DERV, and the Gulf about a mile from the junction does Kerosene.

It's where I have to go to buy diesel for the Genny.
