ive seen several of you mention you buy it readily from the pumps locally , wondered if you name so names ? cambridge , east anglia , often up the A1 to york

How about a 45 gallon drum delivered to your place from your nearest heating oil supply depot with drum tap or syphon for the drum . Is this heating oil Kero by any chance ?

Our 205l oil drums are probably near to that.

We use a sack barrow but ideally a 2 man job really.

It'll be 200kg give or take.

You can "walk them" on the bottom edge, like you see them moving beer barrels around. Needs to be on concrete for that really.

On moderately smooth ground, you can move them with a decent enough sack truck, alone, with some effort.

I forget how heavy I am - maybe 11.5 stone or somthing, but the difficult bit is always the initial tilt, swinging your body away from the drum to try and lift up the further edge.

It's no fun, but it's not impossible (we are talking tamped concrete, cracks, slight incline etc - powerfloated would be way easier)

Two barrels then set on their side raised up off the ground , first see if the fuel company will pump into your barrels if they are close enough to the road for their hose lengths , you might need a brick & concrete built bund able to hold any .

I use our 1200 litre heating oil tank as a supply . having plumbed in a ball action filling tap in the pipe line at a convenient height & place .
Would it be viable to get a small 500 litre bunded plastic tank and have it filled once every year or two depending on your consumption ? My small j=kero truck heater that heats my mancupboard can use about 6 litres in 10 hrs to keep the 22 x 11 man cupboard nice and toasty during minus 7 oC out side /

Depending on how you feel could this then be a workable solution ? They are usually given a very long warrantee life .

I used to move 205's full of engine oil on my own, deliver them out of the back of a transit van.
I used to carry an old tractor front tyre as an aid.
Push the barrel (it's a lot easier on you & your back to push a barrel onto its rim than pull - with care you can do it and balance it while you move around it to the front & then roll it to where its needed).
I'd push the barrel over in the van onto the tyre, then onto the ply floor so I could reuse the tyre.
Chuck the tyre on the ground behind the rear bumper, then I'd roll the barrel to the edge, then spin it 90-degrees so it fell end-first onto the tyre, then you could tip it off the tyre onto its rim and roll it away without too much effort.

Yes, they make a special drum mover dolly, I have one, and the difference over using a standard handtruck
is night & day.

I came to learn that bloke I had working for me would routinely bear-hug 200L drums of Used Acetone (weighing ~150kg) and just lift them clean in and out of a transit, because it was "too much faff" to use the davit fitted by the back door specifically for the purpose.

This all came to light after he tried to do the same with a drum of DCM (more like 270kg), dropped it, and caused a spill.

Credit to the guy, he immediately cleaned up the spill, over packed the damaged drum, rang my mobile number to fess up, smoothed things over with the customer, took the resultant bollocking without being defensive, and (having avoided the sack by actually getting what he did wrong) started using the lifting equipment like a sane person.

But yeah, over flat, reasonably hard ground it's pretty straightforward to "roll" drums, on concrete it's even possible to go up slopes (down is also technically possible, but not to be recommended).

Once you get the knack of balancing them, the only limit is how heavy a drum you can tip on edge for with your physical strength and weight.

There's two just off J30 of the M1, just over the Notts-Derbyshire Border, but it would be a ½ hr detour for OP on his way up to York.

The JET just off the motorway does Red DERV, and the Gulf about a mile from the junction does Kerosene.

It's where I have to go to buy diesel for the Genny.
