Out with the old junk and in with the new!

Any one who has ever spent years making stuff using three manky old freebie single speed pillar drills will know what a life changing day this it for me!

I now have a 1950s top quality back geared pillar drill in perfect condition, bought off this forum from Brad.

It has a morse taper spindle, 8 speeds, a rotating table, and 86 to 3360 rpm.
All taken to apart, checked, lubed and reassembled.

Now looking forward to much less stress, fewer badly drilled parts, blunted and broken drill bits, and to be brutally frank, a lot less tool blaming and fowl language in the future!

Although I do still have a few other tools that need to take the blame for and be firmly advised of their uselessness...

Yep, and luckily I had a 1440 ac motor on my old Atlas, no data plate on it so had to check with my digi rev counter.

I do like the spring loaded self adjusting motor mount that enables the belt to be moved to alter the speeds tool free. I assume the single locking screw is only used to hold it in for fitting a new belt.

Have I got that right? Does anyone have a manual or a link to a free on line one?

The tolerances are so tight, with no wear, that I spent a couple of hours trying to get the motor mount support rods to slide smoothly after I took it to bits to clean. Even checked and touched up the flats on my surface plate but it didn't help..

In the end I left one nut finger tight with Loctite, and it works now. I reckon it might work or stick according to the seasons!

Yes, they're a brilliant drill, I have 2 of them! There's a thread on the forum somewhere about them.

What I think is really handy is that you can have the speed set for a pilot hole & by switching into back gear you have the speed set for the larger hole in a few seconds, no messing about changing belts!

I leave the motor slides loose, the spring tension is enough to keep the belt tight.

i bought one recently , floor mounted , yet to use it but obviously a great tool. although mine does need a new plate as the old one has had a piece of 1/4 plate welded on where the old one had been ruined by drilling through..but hey ho its way better than what I had .

I've already discovered the quick speed switching, and drilled some big holes, and nice long twin spiral chips that don't break at low speed.

I reckon the spring tension helps with a new belt, like I have as it compensates for wear.

Yep, its really nice watching a sharp 30mm drill bit running at 80rpm chewing through thick plate putting out really long spirals!
