Just got my first mig welder, a clarke 90en from machinemart. The wire feed works but no arc when I try to weld and no sound from the transformers. Is it normal to have no sound from the transformers when first switching on?
You should at least hear the fan running but I don't think my Clarke makes any other sound when just running without welding, excuse the daft question but good connection on the earth clamp?

Assuming you've got the "earth" clamp properly connected to the steel you're trying to weld then disconnect the wire feed from inside so it doesn't spew out wire, put a voltmeter between the contact tip and the return clamp with the meter on V DC and press the trigger, if no voltage shows then it's faulty.
You should be looking for something around 20V.
Work all the power switches on and off a few times too and try different ones.
It's working. It was the cheapo earth cable. When unpacking, I noticed the amber power switch has a crack on it, so that got me thinking it had been damaged in transit or somewhere. And being used to hearing my arc welder buzzing all the time, I thought the clarke was dead.
