Just (re)discovered the Velvet Underground

Heard it as background music in my youth (50 this year). old cobblers was my opinion of it then.
Bought the first album after hearing Renton and co bang on about it Irvine Walsh's books.
well kick me in the taters.
Astonishing. 1967? what?
Groundbreaking amazing stuff. And nit still sounds fresh, some of it.
Makes me want to become a smack head* instantly. Heroin is an incredible song. Waiting for my man? wow.
Hermans Hermits and the Mammas and Pappas were in vogue.
Give it a blast.
Amazing stuff.
Think how many aging teddy boys went bonkers at their kids playing this heathen sound.
When will music get controversial again?
I would love to be horrified by music being played by the teenager.
His mates love my crap music collection.

Yes lou reed was a strange guy, must admit the song you refer sumed it up quite well. I think it explaned the rush they would feel and at the same time the hoplesness of their situation, ie waiting for my man.
My kids seem to to be more into Pink Floyd, maybe we shoud get the straight jackets out.
It would seem that the artists at the time wanted to tell us about what was going on with their lives, rather than crap meaningless badly writen love songs.
However one or two rapp songs do say a lot.

Yep it is the banana sleeve.
I love hearing Perfect day used as an aspirational tune. It is about Smack.
Sordid beautiful music.
Just had a laugh. My boys mate came to visit. Junior is not in.
boys mate went home worried to his Pa, nobody in just awful loud music.
His old man called in concerned.
What was I playing? Heroin.
Did I laugh? did his Pa laugh?
my ambition is to take my boy to a mosh pit and teach him how old people dance.
Been a few years, but ancient cyclists have damn good legs and sharp elbows.
I used to be able to have a 2m circle to myself.
Play Heroin again. and again. 1967?????????

I still have it on CD, just excellent ! Vicious, Satellite of Love, I'm so Free are tracks I like but the whole album is lush.
The Velvet, man, what can I say ! The Velvet Underground And Nico is just WOW !
Kids today just don't know how lucky they are, all this stuff is there, they can just go and discover it !! And too right, there are no wild men in music anymore, like Iggy Pop, just how is he still alive !!

Just played it properly loud.
The rush at the end is amazing.
Tried opiates once loved it. It was given by a paramedic as I was lying in the middle of a cross roads, bike and leg in bits. I loved it.
I can see how it could take over your life. Glad to have done it once.

How odd that Lou Reed is now A alive, and B,shacked up with Laurie Anderson. (true)
That would make for weird TV.

Have a couple of other Velvet's albums on back order.

it's great these guys are now considered cool by the mainstream.
Of course they always were cool.

Yes every now and then somebody will write music that is poetry that can describe their true feelings at a particular period time of their lives.
Must say that a premed I had once for an op that was
then cancelled was very enjoyable experiance, could not care what they did or not do me .
However the stuff is addictive as we all know and most of things we have nicked from us goes to pay for more smack for the addictds, the fence gives them peanuts for the gear. And then next day they have do it all
over again.
In the Nertherlands it is given to the addicts in controlled conditions and this has cut down property crime by a substantial amount. We have a problem in this crountry that could be controlled and maybe some, if not all of our gear may be a lot safer if the smackheads did not have to go out and steal.
Then that brings us to the debate about the legalisation of cannabis. Make it illegal and the criminals make loads of money. Do as the Dutch do and most of the criminals dont make so much money.

Talking Heads, another of my favourites ! Remain In Light is a superb album.

Need to fix that asap before I either slowly die from exhaust fumes or the exhaust drops off !! Would you believe it's gonna be Friday before I can get ramp time at my mates workshop, impossible to do without !

Showing how old I am, Smiths in Guildford had their windows full of copies of it when it came out, only time I saw them do that again was a couple of years later when sticky fingers came out, another Warhol cover.

Favorite track on the banana album is venus in furs.


Some other albums I have on my garage mp3 player, related to the velvets, are slow dazzle by john cale and chelsea girls by nico.

Very sad day.

When I was a younger man, I met him with Whitesnake, before they went all PoodleRock. A genuinely nice bloke. Ian Paice and David Coverdale were in the band then too.

If any of you would like to have a proper mix of old and new music during your day, or night, Radio 6Music is my recommendation. Everything from Velvet underground to First Aid Kit, a lot presented by Ex-musicians, and also John Peels' son Tom. I started listening while recoverving two years ago and apart from Sounds of the Sixties on Radio2 Saturday mornings, do not listen to anything else.

Yes, 50 this year too, June 25th, but still not feeling it. ?When does being old start?
