And they (EEL) had a very short air time, climb, intercept and try to get back ASAP, the later ones I believe had more fuel but less armament. ( from memory of conversation after walking under the static one at Boscombe Down back in the days that I used to go to places like that)

Take off, climb vertically , fire off missiles, land re arm and repeat. Read somewhere that it would've been a relatively pointless exercise in real life as Russian aircraft would outnumber ours by quite a large margin

Talking of take off distances The Aeronca is airborne within 40mtrs 16ltrs/hr cruising at over 70. Everyone was impressed with both figures

Justin Barker had a stand there along with John Ricketts. Couldn't resist a go, I was well impressed. Justin didnt believe me when I said It was my first time. Soooooo.... I'm off to see John sometime soon for some one on one tuition.

Mate who used to fly them out of Suffolk, whe I asked him about their role, answered ' Our job is to keep things going until the politicians sort things out'
In Shox Dr's pix, the last a/c is a DH 82a Tiger Moth and said mate flew his from UK to Oz in '79. Epic Boys Own stuff. Still has it and does a few shows up in Scotland.

Thanks, looks like this could be fun, fitting a verner to a Cessna tomorrow, welded up the exhausts today. It's going down to Sywell Airshow next week...on the back of a trailer with another mockup. I believe the Aeronca is flying down

Managed to get this out the airframe today. Loads more work in it yet. FEA tests tomorrow then I start to add the bracing in where needed.

Finite element analysis. Yes and no. It has to connect to the fuselage at preset pionts. The cockpit was lidar scanned, and the first protype was drawn up, FEA was performed on that but only under certain conditions. So this has been changed, and improved. We now need to know where to place bracing to achieve our goal. So far it’s 9kg under what we have removed

Back in the early 90s I put together a kit from the US. Fabric covered steel fuselage with fabric over ally framed wings. There was some talk about us building them in Portugal and I would have done the fuselage frames, along with the wing spars. The frame was mig welded chrome moly, which surprised me. But apparently the EAA passed it. A/C was a Merlin GT with a Rotax 912 and Warp Drive 3 bladed carbon prop. The weight of the 912 put it over the micro limit, but would pass with one of the 2T lighter units. Managed about 95 mph on 3.5 gph. Gentle handling and not tricky to land.
That frame is really nice, must be interesting. Just curious, what was the original structure?

Its going in a europa. With a turbo rotax 912 Should be good for 195-215. Stock air speed is 120ish, although its calc’d to do 225.

So far it weighs less than we’ve taken out. And now it will sustain a landing at 10m/s. Stock they tend to break in half

This cage is to convert it from a very cramped 2seater to a single, more fuel capacity, steerable nose wheel, re-designed canopy and engine cowl and foot wells. Massive amount of work, it will essentially be a new aircraft.
