hey guys i have been using the disposable bottles but thats getting expensive , anyway a friend off mine has given me an empty grey/green pub bottle , its got some sort of twisty knob on top but does it still need a regulator , if so does the reg just attach to the excisting one ?? and how much will places charge to refill them ?? am thinking i will probably use another 3-4 bottles of disposable on my car @ £40 if i carry on with them , and probably wont do alot more welding when my car is done ! so what will be more cost effective ?

The knob on top of the tank is a shutoff valve.
You will need a regulator. Weldequip sells a reg with the adapter for attaching to the 4mm tube on the small MIGs. It can be seen on his store here.

i bought a pub bottle & had nothing but hassle getting it to close

as fas as filling is concerned if you can find a place to fill it your lucky as i was 2 weeks ago
you cant get the pub bottles filled to full pressure due to them not been able to hold that amount,the blow off valve at the back of the regulator will not hold it
make sure its the one with the ally tap on the regulator,,well thats what the chap siad to me who filled mine said there better than the one ive got which as a plastic type tap,,,,,good luck mate

I managed to acquire a bottle of CO2 years ago and used to get it filled at a local welding supplies place, but in the end, after they were bought out by another company, they stopped changing my empties for full bottles. They told me that due to changes in the law, our beloved health and safety etc it is getting much harder for the amateur welder to get their acquired pub bottled filled.
And nowhere local to me will now do this. Luckily, a local company Adams gas sell me a full cylinder with a deposit (no rental). The shut off valve is easy to close and my cylinder is now 100% safe and legit!
I think you will be better off looking for a non rental gas supplier local to you!

That's right - it'll have nitrogen mixed with c02
Look in the yellow pages for CO2 or fire extinguisher refillers... or pub supplies, they will take that one in "exchange" and give you a BLACK CO2 cylinder for £15-20.
You then either use an argon reg plus an adaptor, or get a new CO2 reg which would have the correct fitting.... although an argon one would allow you to swap to a mix later !

My local fire extinguisher place will tell you over the phone that they don't/can't/won't touch pub bottles... but if you roll up at the gate and rattle your loose change they will swap it like-for-like with a full bottle... in whatever colour it happens to be painted and usually with the brewery's name still on! About £8 a pop last time I got my bottles filled... keeping them in reserve in case I run out of Argoshield at a critical moment!
My mate runs a dive school and fills diving air bottles, so he has an account with BOC or Air Products or whoever and can order Argon or Argoshield if I need it... for a fee, obviously, but gets round me not being able to deal with the gas suppliers directly.
And in return, when he needs little engineering jobs doing...
