I was at the local builders yard on friday, breaking down pallets (i take a bar, as it means i can get about 10x as many in the car!)
Anyhow, the manager came over, and spoke with me... He offered to deliver a bunch of them when they do deliveries in my area, free of charge (they just want shot of them).
The vast majority of pallets now are just heat treated (HT) but there would probably be a few MB etc. that id have to drive to the dump... (so as to keep the environment agency happy)
But, that aside, i turned him down (for the moment) as im not in a position to unload that many entire parts in one go (the yard is still mud and dumpy bags of hardcore!)
Anyhow, if youre still with me....
Processing pallets is time consuming. We do all our heating / DHW here from biomass.
If i can get pallets delivered, then some sort of burner that takes them whole would make life a lot simpler.
In light of this, i thought id ask here, and on some other relevant forums, if anyone has any ideas - kind of brain storming type thing.
My initial ideas / possibilities include -
Just building the enclosure for burning the pallets, and passing the exhaust on to an old oil central heating boiler (ie using it as an exchanger only)
Building the pallet burner horizontal (if i use the CH boiler idea) so as i dont have to have a boiler up in the air somewhere.
Advantages of a separate boiler are that the combustion temps are so much higher, and the burn is more efficient / cleaner. In which case id be tempted to line with vermiculite bricks, or a fire cement / vermiculite diy mix.
Not using a CH boiler, and just building a double skin device. May as well build it upright then.
I dont want get any heat to air from the device - just heat to water. Id put it outside (or in the detached garage) so as not to void any paperwork, and just pump the water inside.
So, anyone got any more ideas?
