Hi guys,

Just bought this to have a go at Mig,

Its a Sealey MightyMig 100XT MKII Turbo.

I know sealey havent got the best rep, but it was only £45 (plus I bought some gas and 0.6mm wire for it for £15)

Someone said using 0.8mm wire is better?? To run 0.8 wire I take it I need a 0.8mm tip and anything else??

Plan on getting some spare tips and shrouds, and maybe a new swan neck too. Then giving the outside casing a respray.

Any other (easy) mods I can do to improve this set up?

Got a Suzuki Bandit 1200 streetfighter project on the go so excited to get stuck in and make some of my own parts.

i think you'll need to have the wire feed roller for 0.8mm??
on my clarke 90 the roller is reversible, one side 0.6mm the other 0.8mm

0.8mm wire is just a good general size that can weld a good range of thicknesses. 0.6mm will still be fine for smaller welding however so you should be fine. I use 0.6mm wire for 1-3mm, haven't ventured onto thicker metal yet so can't comment as to how thick you can go with 0.6mm. But there's nothing wrong with the wire you got, so lay some beads and get the hang of your machine before worrying about which wire to use.

I bought the same machine brand new. I cant really give a true oppinion of the machine as I have only used it the once when my clutch gave up. The clutch arm on my peugeot snapped (gearbox end) so I welded it back on with the 0.6 gasless wire that came with the machine. Its still in one piece after 6 months which cant be bad as the clutch arm does take quite a bit of force during operation.

I had no trouble setting the machine to what I wanted so Im quite happy with it so far.

So far I am impressed, Mig seems so much easier than Tig (tried and failed Tig on several occasions) I have run a few beads and all seems good. Still experimenting with wire speed, power and techniques so still a way to go before doing any major works.

Only slight problem is wire slip, gonna have a play with the tensioner and wire reel clamp today to see how that helps. If not I presume a new wire feed roller/tensioner would be the best way to go?

When you say 'wire slip', what exactly do you mean?
The rollers should be set just tight enough that you can physically stop the wire from feeding and the rollers will slip rather than keep pushing the wire causing it to 'birdsnest'.
If you're having feed problems then quite likely the torch needs a new liner.

Wozzaaah as I was welding the wire would momentarily stop feeding and then start again, kept doing this every now and again, just figured the wire was slipping on the rollers.

I suppose it could be that it is getting caught up in the liner. I will investigate further..........

As well as the liner, have a quick look at the feed roller and make sure this has not got any debris in the groove and that the wire reel holder is not too tight.
If possible go for a steel liner, not the standard plastic one, as these are troublesome to say the least.

To be honest when I bought the welder the guy said it was in full working condition.

When I got it home and put the wire in it, I fed it through but then it would get stuck at the gun end.

So I dismantled it, and there was all crud in the tip, and the very end of the liner was a bit melted and manky, managed to get the end of the wire through but cant be the best thing for wire speed/control, so probably best just to replace for a new liner anyway.

Really pleased with how easy Mig is to do, so may just sell my Tig set now and splash out on a better quality Mig.

Give the rollers a good clean, my wire feed didn't used to be great until I cleaned
the rollers, it's spot on now (they were all greasy)!
