This spade from a well known DIY store is a joke, there is a bit of square bar inside socket but its not attached to anything, the crack shows its full of blow holes in the casting, and the rivet was bent as seen , and fell out after i drilled the head off.

Still might give it a go though, whats the best electrode for dubious cast carbon steel ?

My neighbour had a lawn edger, same pattern and colour of coating so suspect from the same supplier and the handle snapped on that, I just used a cheap Aldi rod on it and it actually welded up fine, still in use after probably 4 years or so by now.

Out of principle I wouldn't weld it. Send it back.

It will only snap at the edge of the weld anyway, even if you manage to blob it back together.

I got it out of their skip already busted.

If I did weld the crack I would try to make a collar to weld on top of that to double it up, its way too thin at the neck as it is.

Think i have the same spade in my shed. Used it once for digging a hole and could feel the head flexing, a crack had appeared at the ‘shoulder’. I found this one too!

i mig welded my shovel and its still in use today i didnt even paint it

i snapped it whilst getting out a large concrete ex metal post the other shovels all did it before but that one didnt but after welding it got the other one out

in a moment of stupidity i once bought a silverline set square...... i mistakenly thought how can they possobly mess up makeing a set square there is only one thing that matters...... turns out it's a set unsquare for the sake of fudge..... but it turns out it dose actually have a use if you use it to tack cleats on a beam ( as long as the tacks are on the same face as your useing the square then weld the other side first they pull up square but i'm sure thats but utter chance

I bought a cheap wrecking bar ( i cant remember what i usually call it) and it was useless but a bit of alteration and its good for tent peg pulling.

still got my all steel building shovel from years ago, did buy a new 1, the old'n is about 1,1/2 shorter......since bought a cable trencher, the wife's nicked that for planting.......

Ffs. That’s just crap. Get yourself a good old one, Skelton, Parkes, Brades. Even modern Bulldog tools are questionable. You can’t really beat hand forged steel garden tools. Carters tools make good digging spades - still made in England, too

Just what I thought. Made to look old, not to be used. Lidl sell SS spades at times, take some beating tbh

so meany garden tools are made of such poor steel, numbe of times i've tryed to sharpen things that are meant to cut and just ended up haveing a wampy,

feww weeks ago i found some shears in the bottom of the hedge, had to strip them apart wirebrush them regrind the edge, make new wood handels and make a funny shanked bolt to hold them together, but they will sharpen properly and hold that edge so they actually cut

The old stuff refuses to die - this little lot has taken a few years to build up but they’re great to use. Wooden handles oiled or waxed don’t give blisters either. A few old companies would make fully strapped spades and forks for heavy digging work. I only buy British stuff.

Problem with a lot of cheap DIY spades and stuff is they get left outside for burglars to use and rot from the inside out, so it's a security feature really.


I love cheap tools. I have a selection of unbranded spanners that have served me well that get cut up and welded back together to get in confined spaces etc
