think they tried that with trains, called a Diesel electric.......may as well go the whole hog and fit a deltic engine into the boot.....might be a tight fit though

Small ultra efficient engine to generate power and charge and a conventional EV drive chain
See plenty with the engine doing the driving.

It happens and it's a pain. My van has full-lift capability so in many cases i can move stuff like that. Otherwise it goes on a truck with skates or by hiab. Many don't have a bypass to engage neutral though.
New black cabs. Small petrol engine is only there to charge, all drive done by traction motor. That's the right way to do hybrid. The Prius system is the worst of both worlds.

I think that’s the point - it locked itself in position.
to be fair I’m not sure how easy it would be to move any of the modern automatics (my Volvo has a button for park No gear selector so to speak) I presume if it went proper flat it would need dragging or all the wheels lifting off the ground
looks like the posts above beat me to it. To clarify I’m talking non EVs here !

The Leaf broke down on about 1 in 5 slope, only a car width as well, I think they were stuffed all ways.

It's a method that needs serious consideration for small /medium vans and trucks
Charging while parked at customers charges your tool batteries. Acts as a generator for mains tools.

Even better, a hole in the floor for your feet, it worked for Fred FlintstoneHave a little shaft coming out the side of the centre console, and a pair of pedals in the boot. Slide them on, engage the drive dog and pedal away.

BMW made plenty of i3s with a "REx" (range extender). Basically a 650cc petrol engine that charged up the battery, I used to drive one at work and after a long hard drive and running the battery down the petrol engine would fire up a few miles before I was back to base and be running flat out whilst driving through town..... not the best advert for an EV with the little petrol engine going flat out whilst sitting in traffic! Invariably I'd have had enough battery charge left to get where I needed to go but the system was automatically starting up in each case. Think some of the REx engines had issues with infrequent usage not helping things. They've stopped making the REx models now I believe as the battery capacities have increased and more fast chargers on the go.

Here's a novel idea, a light car powered by a very efficient petrol donk (think the past challenges with MPG in the several hundreds) and just (forcably) educate people that is what will get them around in comfort. Yes, if you want a big SUV, tax them till the pips squeak and label the owners as idiots and social misfits. (or, just ban them from city centres, that will clean up London)
Peeps who need towing capacity, allow diesels with the capability. But with limits on use, as in, when needed.
Just noticed that Teslas came next to bottom in reliability in a survey. Interesting, as one thought that a battery and an electric motor (or two) was very simple.. Perhaps not..
I like cars, had a few with a bit of 'wizz', but (if we believe the scientists..) their time as an means of getting about is past, in their current form.
Likely Clive Sinclair had it right, but with a little more weather protection and two seats..
Sorry for the rant (well, not really) but she is watching 'Strickly' and I would rather have a doc's finger up my rear end than that.
