Johnstone fence paint

I just spent a fortune on a big tub of this stuff, come to use it today and its like spreading grease on a wet fence, using a wet brush, it simply doesn't seem to want to stick to anything.

I used a normal brush, quite big and bushy, dip it in, and when you pull it out its like the stuff just falls of. I found I was having to scoop it up and plaster it on the fence, smear it on, to get any coverage. Its unlike any paint I have ever used. Anybody got any experience?

At this rate I'll be here for weeks, 50m of fence to do. And its pink, supposed to be Red Cedar....

Johnstone is usually good stuff, though we've only used their interior paint. When I've used fence and shed paint, both branded and cheapo stuff, my complaint is usually the opposite - it's like water and needs 3 coats. I'm presuming you stirred it plenty, so could be a duff batch? Can't imagine fence paint goes off quickly.

It may have been subjected to frost - that does odd things to this kind of stuff. Def shouldn't be as @Morrisman describes.

It looks like that non drip, do not stir type emulsion paint, thick and creamy.

But when it is on and dried a bit it is not an unlikable finish.

I shall soldier on, had a ho earlier, but after 20 minutes it started hailing, so I abandoned play for the time being.

should have used genuine creosote on it it lasts for years shot a bit of waste engine I oil in with it as well scrotes hate it it ruins there hoodys and best gear when they climb over it

pity u wernt local to me I can get it of a guy at a reasonable price . u can get it of suppliers on ebay or smith and allen keep it so im told im paying about 28 quid a drum for it but I believe it sells for about 40 quid delivered

that's one. if they wont sell it to u just get a builder or farmer to get it for u I one got some they asked if I was a professional and I said yes and they sent it. just didn't tell them I was an electrician

I actually thought it was banned under ‘elf and safety nowadays.

I read it on here not long ago. Just tried to google it but I go mired in legalese and jargon.

I've used a bit of Johnstones/Leyand paint. The interior stuff was excellent probably the best paint I've ever used but I had some metal paint and it's not a patch on Rustoleum Combi Color.

@Morrisman the end result you've got actually looks very good given what you started with. That kind of surface is always a dog to paint.

@Morrisman the end result you've got actually looks very good given what you started with. That kind of surface is always a dog to paint.

I've developed a technique, basically scoop a dollop of paint up like a plasterer, and smear it up the fence plank.
It takes a bit of messing about, but I've finished the first of three sides now. Looks okay.

Shame this stuff is no good.

I've tried plenty different metal paints and the ONLY one I like is Johnstones Professional Gloss. Everything else is rubbish, even their own metal paint.

They are easy to buy from and have good prices. I have had a couple of hundred litres from them. Mixed with waste oil as Brightspark says, it goes a long way.
