Are they not all recycling centres now ? I was under the assumption people payed for products that can be recycled so surely they would want people to bring as much to them as possible ?

I know at my local place i have to sort everything into about 100 different areas so they can ship it off for recycling without having to sort through it.

Some years back we were having a tidy-out at work, so we hired a Luton van and ran loads of junk to the local tip (pre-recycling centres).
On our third run we found ourselves surrounded by people in dayglo waving clipboards and looking frantic. One of the scavengers had picked out a flattened cardboard box with 'Radiaoactive' trefoil labels all over it.
They accused us of dumping Radioactive waste, but luckily I'm a quick-thinking bull****ter when I need to be and I told them that I'd just bought another house, we were tipping junk left by the previous owner and the box was one I'd taken from work for the wife to put her valuable collection of glass ornaments in, the box being highly-visible meaning it would be obvious where the glass bits were
They fell for it, I had to sign some form saying I wasn't a fly-tipping gyppo and we went on our merry way.
Now I can't even take my empty beer bottles to the recycling centre in the company van without a chitty from the council (max 12 per year). Sometimes I take the TVR instead, after all who'd notice another skip?
