Fitters who were Steelworks Apprentices could do all that and more, including welding. They were equipped with all the machines so they could repair broken equipment. Its the onset of Insurance led risk assessment jobs that has killed it.....now you need a piece of paper to show you can do it......and that paper costs £500 a year or whatever it costs..Don't want a lot from a mechanical technician do they? "General workshop tasks such turning, milling..." Well that would be the job of a machinist/turner, not a fitter.
