Fitters who were Steelworks Apprentices could do all that and more, including welding. They were equipped with all the machines so they could repair broken equipment. Its the onset of Insurance led risk assessment jobs that has killed it.....now you need a piece of paper to show you can do it......and that paper costs £500 a year or whatever it costs..

I was saying that for 20 years after London Transport was privatised, guess what, it did, it got worse.
Driving a bus for LT we had 2 pay grades, Driver & OMO Driver - the former drove Routemasters with a conductor on the back and the other was One Man Operation.
When I retired due to ill health, the privatised company I worked for had 18 pay grades - as the years rolled by the company brought in lower and lower rates of pay, and did there best to attack those on the top rates.
Too many fat cats lining there own pockets to care about those who actually do the hard work.
Look what the government wants to offer Nurses as a pay rise.
That's a ******* Insult.
I have seen at least 6 jobs in the last few weeks for Design & technology technicians in schools, the going rate is minimum wage.
For that they want someone who is a skilled woodworker, wood machinist, metalworker, turner, electronics expert, cad expert, plastics expert & textiles too. You have to be proficent in IT, do regular safeguarding courses have design & technology association h&s certificates & be crb checked too..
It also helps if you can read teachers minds cos they sure wont tell you what they require in advance. Then you have to deal with the horrible little scrotes as well.
And so the management are all whining about how they cant fill the posts. Pay a decent rate & you might get people.
Yet gardeners round here charge £20 an hour minimum & are booked solid for weeks mowing lawns!
It is a big race to the bottom.

I have to have my feet done about every 2 months, corns and hard skin.......It costs £32 a time.......it takes 15/20 minutes.....so the girl who does it is earning at least £64 / hour and shes fully booked for 2 months....the course, foot health practitioner, takes 10 days and 80 hours....thats it........yes, she has overheads but not many, rent and a few scalples etc.........not a bad little earner in my humble opinion

Most of my approaches have been direct or from a small number of head hunters after a bit of tweaking of my CV.I have thrown out the old crap in a bit of CV decluttering as ICL DRS 6000 Unix is fit only for the science museum and HP1000 RTE-A is hogging its spot there already.
Sparc is still showing up on Jobserve as people scramble their workloads to alternatives so that can stay, for now.
Binning off the old tech seems to have tipped the balance but it is three months into IR35 so perhaps some of those projects pushed back by batflu have now reached a state of urgency ?
I know it well, had a contract there building HPC clusters quite a while ago, before using Graphics cards was a thing.

I think the time - revelation - even a revolution will come.
Where people who can actually do something to a resonable standard - will get paid well.
There are so many so called tradesmen - trading that just can't do the jobs - turn out any quality of work.
With the closing down of the input of labour from the EU - there is big hole in every trade for skilled labour.

I think you’re right Bob. There isn’t much left to offer. I think that ship has sailed as it were
It’s just a thought I’ve often had that why were we paid better 30 years ago than we are now. That’s the only thing I can think of that’s changed in that time. I know guys have come in who will do it cheaper but they existed back then I’m sure?
All that said I dunno what the answer is. As long as I can keep going till I retire I am happy I think. I like to see others succeed too but as for the bigger picture it’s gonna take more than me to answer that one!!
A big problem is management who are out of touch.
My employer has had a vacancy advertised for nearly two months now, and they've had no suitable applicants.
They're wanting the moon on a stick, and if you don't have two certain qualifications, then management aren't even inviting them for an interview. They'd rather have an unfilled role, than spend money on training somebody new.

Hopefully the law of supply and demand will prompt the owners to jack the wages up a bit.
Quality of work, is a major problem.
I know somebody who bought a new build house, and the list of snagging went to four sides of A4 paper.
He couldn't belief some of the problems, and some of the 'skilled' tradesmen who came to do with the repairs were useless. He chased one pair out the house for trying to cut corners, and told the company they better find somebody who'd do the job right.
Ironically, he said the best tradesman he had in for the repairs, was a Polish joiner. He was the only person who had some pride in his work and actually done the job right, whereas the locals expended the minimum effort, and left making the repairs look better to the decorators who'd be along after them.

I admire your optimism, but can't see it happening any time soon. Especially with so many people out of work and looking. Employers can offer terrible money and there'll be a queue of people ready to take it out of need.
(Of course the amount of skill required for the job will have an influence.)
Seems more shocking how many skilled jobs are advertised now at or around minimum wage.
