JB weld

I’ve always considered products such as JB weld to be solely for temporary repairs (bodges), although I’ve never used it personally.

Got a motorbike engine case that has as small bit of damage where the kickstart gear was put in backwards causing part of the kickstart mech to connect with the case.

It’s basically a small recess that the kickstart return sits in so no massive forces going though it, welding the cast alloy will be tricky so perhaps A product such as JB weld could be an option? What do you guys think

Is this internal or external on the engine ? If external "what have to got to loose" however If internal I wouldn't risk it.

I have used it as a metal filler in my drill table that had a hole of shame that annoyed me and it worked quite well.

In that use however it has no stress at all on it, for your repair I would probably choose Araldite over JB weld, only because I have had some really good success with araldite.

Don't get the Araldite Rapid, use the original slow cure one and all parts must be cleaned really well with acetone, cellulose thinners or similar.

I’ve used JB weld to secure maul heads onto fibre glass handles. Lasted long enough. A couple of years at least, splitting 10 tons of logs in that time.

If its internal then I would never trust a product like that in a hostile environment. Heat, oil and vibration are against it and will be trying to get between the join. It's not like a gasket sealer that has a mechanical clamping force applied to help with the adhesion.
My advice would be remove the part and find someone local with a TIG to repair it properly.
I do loads of stuff like this for play money. I'm sure there will be someone near you to do it for not a lot of pennies.

Yeah it’s internal on the lower engine case. Glad I found it before starting the engine!

Will look into getting it tigged, thanks for the advice folks

What about the low melting point alloy repair rods, used some to repair a mazak oil filler on my old motor. Done correctly & the joint is as good the parent metal.

It’s not uncommon to see people repair huge holes in the crank cases from snapped drive chains with JB weld which continue on for thousands more miles which is what made me ask the question. If it were to fail though the first I’d probably know about it is the gearbox exploding after a lump of metal goes through it!

JB weld is now so very different to the old product......first hand experience of failure.......they should change the advert.......
got more chance of success with cheese.......
never tried Devcon tho........kinda put off with those products now.........

the JB weld in my cylinderhead is still going well, its been there about 10 years now.
