Here I am surfing the net to find out what ally is used on my bikes subframe so I can finish the rear end of my bike off and I come across this

In defence of such people, the advertising material (and name in this case) for these adhesives indicates that the bond would be strong enough. And that forum thread did put they guy off using JB Weld for his subframe.

Anyway, aren't we living the sci fi future now? We have thousands of TV channels available on handheld devices, GPS so we don't need any map reading skills, computers in every house linked to massive databases, yet I'm still waiting for my X-Ray specs that can miraculously see through clothes but not skin. So miracle glues that replace welding seem plausible, so as long as it doesn't interfere with the development of my x-ray specs...

JB weld and Easyweld are useful on aluminium. I used them myself for some guttering and did some testing and believe the strength claims, but it took practice to get right and I wouldn't use them for anything safety critical.

Good the linked thread sorted the question. Marketing might confuse some, but they are not anywhere near as good as TIG for structural things.

Just to be boring for a moment, any of these joining methods depend on the right design of joint for the method. You wouldn't tig an Elise chassis together, nor would you build the tubes of a mountain bike headset with an adhesive (unless of course it's carbon or one of those funny early 90's lugged Raleigh Special Products things)

Ooh, looks sexy! Although I though the problem with early carbon fibre bikes was that they used tubular sections bonded together, that made the, a bit whippy - the answer was to build the frames as a monocoque, making use of the materials properties properly rather than just trying to substitute CF for metal tubes.

A friend of mine had a carbon frame road bike a few years ago and it fell over on the drive which was not a problem till his wife reversed the car over it. I like the look of socketed bamboo frames. Good joints seem to depend a lot on surface area for strength.

You think that's bad, do a search for 'Shervin Rezaiy' he rides a ZX10 and is famous for things like cutting holes in the frame for saving weight, plexi glass foot peg hangers, and a stupid exhaust amongst other things.

I've always considered him a wind up or a made up character, I don't believe someone can be that dense, especially when he claims to be an engineer. Good reading though
