Japanese Industrial Standard - JIS

If you have come across a "cross head " screw where neither a Phillips nor a Pozidrive seem to be a good fit it possibly has a JIS profile head - so I've just learnt. The next issue is that screw drivers for this profile seem quite difficult to find in the UK with most advertised sets being "from the USA"
Anyone come across and solved this problem?

Ah,so that's why my friend, who seldom gets his hands dirty, was so knowledgeable on the subject!

Dunno if it was mentioned on the tv or not but in theory JIS screws should sometimes have a single dimple on the head for ID. About the only time i've knowingly encountered JIS screws is when i was in the bicycle trade and i had a few modified phillips screwdrivers for Shimano limit screws and the like (ground the tip back a little to lose the 'rounded' double angle). No dimples on those but then they're tiny things anyway
IME on cars/motorbikes and the like someone has usually already ******** the screw so no screwdriver fits properly... there are some 'proper' products about to increase grip & reduce cam out (EZ screw grip or whatever it's called) but a drop of valve lapping paste does the same thing on those occasions when the screw is properly tight and has yet to be properly FUBARed

Years ago I "acquired" a set of 4 "JIS" screwdrivers as I found that the Honder Dream I owned was riddled with them.

Some one once told me the heads were left "soft" compared to the body of the screws on purpose, so when the wrong tool was used it damaged the screw, resulting on you having to buy new fixings. How true this is I never could find the definitive answer.

Early Jap bikes who had the dimple on the head sometimes had the dimple filled in with coloured paint, this was to indicate what torque setting to be used,

The only other time I have come across JIS screws was on a, I quote. " Very expensive" push bike.

I've had lots of dealings with JIS fasteners and they are pants. They have been too greedy with the steel cutting corners wareever possible and all this archives is rounded corners.

I've known about the JIS drivers for years due to having a lot of Jap bikes but could never justify the cost of buying a set. I found a crosspoint bit that came with an impact driver many years ago fitted a majority of them well enough.

I bought a set of JIS screwdrivers a few years ago, again to use on Japanese motorcycles - they weren't cheap, but worth it I would say. I got them from Rugged Roads

They do, I've got them for working on jap bikes - considering how many times I've knackered JIS head screws using philips drivers, I wish I had fond out about these a lot earlier.
