Paul is sorting delivery of the xyz lathe on Monday. I'll post some more pictures of it when I get to see it. I will help him get it running with a Steinmetz connection just to see things turning.

those that know where i have worked previous and have been there themselves will understand completely when i say the stuff ive seen smashed up and put in the skip, and had to forklift into the skip myself, would make most members on here cry. absolutely ludicrous but no chance of ever getting it

Paul tested the XYZ lathe last night by slaving in a vfd. The vfd was a 240 volt 3 phase unit. As the motor was still in star, the output power was only about 30% of the rated value. Enough though just to get the wheels turning and see things working.
The lathe has about 40 thou play in the cross slide, which will be adjusted out. Also one of the DRO scales is missing. It is hoped that a low cost one can be got and fitted.
Paul tells me the machine has made in India labels all over it. I thought these machines were assembled in the UK from castings made in Taiwan?

Hi, That takes me back to my childhood when some items from the East used to have 'Empire made' on them. Older members may remember as well.

"Empire Made" was usually a euphemism for "Made in Hong Kong", which was part of the British Empire and well known for manufacturing cheap shoddy goods. Now it's part of China, which is well known for manufacturing cheap shoddy goods.

Paul has now got the correct manual for this lathe. He has been checking the gearbox over. He has adjusted to gibs and the cross slide lead screw nut.

Forgive me but if its written down to nothing.then they sell it they still make 2/3rds of what they sell it for, or am i missing sonething?

I think given the condition of the machine as it has started to reveal itself, it was destined for scrap. Paul knew someone and that's how he got it.

Paul has been using the machine to turn some hubs. Making Jag bearing hubs from steel to replace aluminium ones.
