Jaguar XE strikes again!

The car is fixed now. I didn't spend any time playing with it, sent it on recovery lorry to the Jag guy a couple weeks back and got it back tonight.

He found a part of the engine wiring harness which had chafed on the engine compartment somewhere and that took out the crash module. So engine loom repaired and new crash module got and coded £720 later its back running.

It will be going for a valet tomorrow now and off my street for good asap. She finally agrees that it's not worth the constant hassle some £3k wasted on repairing it in a short ownership period.

From speaking to many people who I would trust their opinion on automotive wise and my own experience with this Jag, for anyone with modern JLR stuff you should have 1 of 2 things on your person at all times. That is a tow rope or a bus pass as you will need em.

She is going for a Mercedes again next time,.hope to go over the water and get one in mainland in coming weekend(s) once this Jag is gone.

Anyway wanted to post the results to conclude this thread FWIW

Whilst I did enjoy driving my 600 during this time the local fuel stations need time to replenish their stocks

We have 25 or so MBs in my immediate family and we have NEVER had any of the sorts of repairs this Jaguar has required. Bear in mind also some of these cars are new and some are 40+ years old with 5 times the mileage on the clock. One with over 1/4m miles. Yet never had these issues. So go figure.

It helps that I have dealer level MB software etc so if something does go wrong it's in my wheelhouse. So that's also a factor for me personally.

This Jag is a lovely looking car no mistaking that - it's just not been a good experience for us at all and other owners have had similar experiences.

Like most things, the older Merc's have much better build quality than the more recent ones - especially the 'Renault in a posh frock' models, they were mostly built in the Fatherland after all, unlike those in the last decade or so. (the same goes for Volvo) I've never got on with 'oily rags' myself but I do find the LR part of JLR more resilient and less prone to issues that should have been picked up at 'powertrain meets chassis' stage - or more easily identifiable/fixable at any rate... I've done a lot with LR's, mainly in/up & down/ across Africa etc., I wouldn't have the same confidence in a Jag even if the roads were Peage smooth...

Well having just forked out 3 hundred quid for an injector for a poxy Transit, I would say £720 to pay someone to trace and fix your fault was reasonable. Notwithstanding all your other expenses of course, maybe the merc is a better risk.

Reading this thread has shown me just how much more uber-complicated and technically challenging current era vehicles are - that extensive list of different electronic modules etc littering every area of the vehicle is totally off-putting & why I'm so wary of them.

I only had a general understanding of the discussion, while lots iif the acronyms & tech-speak (while interesting & there are clearly a few posters way more advanced than I on this stuff) I didn't know what they were!

I cannot shake the belief that the car has become massively overcomplicated and the use of electronics and fragile comms systems way too prevalent.

I'm firmly in the "KISS" camp I'm afraid. Once things moved to digital stuff like CANBUS instead of old-school wiring it gets all Voodoo & unnecessary IMO

Talking of technology I was watching a youtube channel on repairing a crashed BMW bought from the auctions, it had a flat battery that they couldn't charge because it contained an ECU that disconnected the output terminals if the cell voltage dropped below a set level. A new one would be £750 but they found some one who opened the case and charged the cells directly, you could even hear the output relay click in as the voltage came up.

That's a Lithium battery - unless they used a specific charger or somehow injected voltage after the disconnect but before the charge controller, it's quite a risky thing to do. That type of starter battery also disconnects if the SRS module triggers specific airbags.

OK so I got a 3 month old genuine MB AGM battery perfect one 100% health etc and the car is the same.

I appreciate the replies. But don't go into defend mode when I say you can trust me on this!

I know nothing about jags as its not my interest. But I am very experienced in auto electronics and batteries running several S classes of my own for 20 years. So I am well used to that and good thing to check thanks for the suggestions in that regard but it's not the battery.

I have the same list of codes, jaguar xe Diesel, broke down.had car recovered car will not start.
Clicking under rear seat and door locks clicking when ignition is on.
Have you found out the problem yet ? Anyone else had the same issues?

The issue here was chaffed wiring harness within the engine bay. Jag tech repaired the loom. Crash module was damaged by the loom and must be replaced.

So it was another £750ish repair IIRC and would have been much worse had we not had a Jag guy do this at home and with his own software and repairing the harness too instead of replacement.

He didn't say exactly where in the engine bay but I imagine if you follow the harness and look for metal edges won't be hard to find possible areas of damage
