Time has come for me to look at a new van. Got my eye on an iveco daily. 2015ish. As a builder I like the slightly more utilitarian nature, the rugged build, 3.5t tow rating. Only work locally so not too fussed about creature comforts. So firstly I'm sure some have experience, ideas, opinions I'd like to hear, secondly there's a few engine options. 105bhp, 126bhp, in 2.3 guise. Current transporter has 1.9 105bhp and is fine when loaded but struggles with a 2 ton trailer so I'm thinking the 126bhp 2.3 is best compromise. Is there any way I can find which power version it is from the reg? Gov search tells co2 level but not power. Getting engine specs to cross reference is proving difficult!

Put the reg into Eurocarparts vehicle finder it will give you the make, model and engine capacity.

In the past when faced with the same problem I go to a re-mapping website, (even though I have no interest in re-mapping), key in the reg, and it tells you current power and power after re-map

Not had an Iveco but had plenty of Crafters and sprinters.
Are you going front or RWD?
If you are always going to carry a heavy load then RWD is fine. Better turning circle as well.
If you are only carrying light loads than FWD is better. Far better traction.
Remember the huge LWB vans actually have a smaller payload than the medium or short wheel base models as the bodyshell is heavier.

Now my old LDV has shuffled off, I'm casting about for a possible replacement (camper use). In many ways, I viewed the Daily as thr LDV's natural successor (solid ladder chassis, prone to rust, not too refined, niggles with handles & trim but basically a solid worker).
The trouble is, that the newer they get (all vans/cars not just the Daily) - the more expensive trouble you potentially buy, and not for banger money!

I was thinking of trying to find a van that was pre-dpf to minimise modern maladies - which I think meas pre-2010? Which means most vans have done starship miles & are bashed & rotten (& up at "you're havin' a larf" money to boot).
After I think 2006 some vans like Renault Master got galved underbody... then you find out they are part of some massive conglomerate (3-letters - PSA, PDA ??) so have Transit 2.2L engines in them - so it's a confusing lottery!
I can't seem to find a single van made after say 2005 that's got a bulletproof reputation and don't rot away (speaking of which, I've seen a couple of Daily's online with the bump panels removed... & what looked a good condition van with them on, looked like the Titanic's 110yo Hull underneath).
I think if I could find a not starship miles, 2005-ish rust-free Sprinter, that might be my Unicorn - but I doubt such a beast exists (esp. at sensible money)....

Probably can't see it
There are some nasty looking seams in the rear wheel arch area that are real mud traps - no sign of any sort of sealant

We have a 2008 turbo daily , and runs good , never had a problem .
Fiat is not Mercedes , but it's a good alternative .
I would go with the 126 bhp , but it depends on how many miles it gots .

My mate swears by his old Fiat Ducato - think it's around 2008 - got the Transit engine in it. Abused and never lets him down. I have borrowed it often - lovely to drive.

Fiat always used Fiat engines, however PSA (Peugeot Boxer/Citreon Relay) used the Ducato chassis/body and did fit the 2.2 Ford engine for a while

His is definitely badged up as a FIAT.

Something I noticed is only white sprinters are rusty? Mates black on is fine?

They're all painted white to start with. The ones in colours get the colour paint over the white. They're less prone to rust just due to the thicker paint.

I had a silver one and it was spotless. My current white one has some little bits of surface rust.

I still wouldn't buy anything else in that category of van. Certainly not a Ducato/Relay/Boxer. Ever.

Not strictly true, the Fiat Scudo used the same PSA engines as its French cousins. Fiat did try fitting their own head to the 2l 16v engine block that proved to be very troublesome and switched back to using the PSA heads.

Ironically, the Ford Connect and Fiesta have Peugeot engines.

As do A-Class Mercs - all those poor people who bought the 3-pointed star and probably didn't realise there was a French taxi engine under it.

I think the A-Class uses a Renault DCi engine. (Worse) BMW use some Peugeot engines in the 1- and 2-Series, and the Minis.

The Merc Citan van is just a rebadged Kangoo with a huge price premium.

Guy I work with has got an A class. It provides us with hours of office based amusement to always refer to it as his Renault. Even more so as someone else has got a Renault with the same engine that cost significantly less, and that he bites every time.

It's the little things that make the days tolerable.
