I been thinking of putting an electric or hand winch on my iveco. Does the electric winch run off the main battery or do they run a separate power supply. Fab work isn't a problem.

Run it off a second battery with split charging keep second battery close to winch to cut down losses on cable
Sod the hand winch

you can run it from the original battery or add a second one

personally I'd add a second battery in case you're winching a lot one day - no need to worry about running battery flat


used to use tail lifts a lot... I'd always leave the van ticking over

My truck is ex utilities and has a warn 8000 on the front. It’s on the original battery but it’s got a battery saver and run lock fitted.

If I was fitting it I think I’d use a second battery on split charge but keep the saver and run lock.

Second battery shouldn’t be a leisure one in this case. They don’t like high short draw. They are better suited to long low draw like lights

Run it off the main starter battery, engine running in neutral, brick on accelerator pedal.

If it’s just for pulling up wheeled plant / vehicles main battery will be fine, but if you’re going to be dragging on dead tracked stuff or pulling stuff out of the mud second battery.

seperate battery with 240v converter also able to use a small compressor

with many other usages as well

I'd just come of the main battery via a megafuse.

Unless of course it's getting alot of use in a day, then I would consider a second battery

Thanks for the replies. Main usage will be mainly small plant and possibly small machinery being I collect a lot of it. Think the second battery route will be a better option. I will look in to the components needed.

Depending on funds I’d definitely look into a run lock and battery saver
