It's a tiny village in the Cotswolds, it's not a sewer. Its about 4 foot wide, then I can see about a foot of vertical wall, the rest is waiting under a pile of dirt.Hard to tell the scale but it looks like an old sewer to me. Is it fully oval? What's the width and height of the void?

There's a lot to do before anyone goes down there but it will be well ventilated first. (and I will get advice on that bit) I'm a bit surprised that given the number of torches littering the place, none of them seem to work..
It's probably the coal cellar for the forge, I was wondering where the kept it as the other coal cellar is under the tidy part of the house, but it is all a bit odd.I dunno then. Maybe it's some kind of cold store.
If he turns up make sure you seal him down in there. You need to contact Drew immediately
OH yes, not filling it in, just putting a top on it. At the moment the roof of the cellar is just the one layer of stone thick, I know its strong as hell load wise, but if I keep walking about on top of it it might loosen the odd stone so I'd just like to fix it. And I'll be less inclined to fall end over apex if its flat...I would want to rummage through what’s in there and survey the hole before filling it in.
I think you should. I'm getting a bit sick of digging out stony soil..I ought come down. I excel at digging out earth.
Famous last words, but its all fairly loose so far just usual nonsense of working in a hole plus loads of it is falling down in there. I'm wondering about getting a load of rubble bags, and getting down in there and stacking the crap down there till theres some steps to get it out. as long as I can find a helper, and once I've blown some fresh air down there. Not easy, is it. That long hex bar I have came in extremely useful for helping loosen up the clay and then stone for removal.
