It quickly gets out of hand

I’ve already put 500 hours on the H2S and now it has a more capable brother.
I’m starting to do some small production batches of parts for the company I work for so needed to expand.
So new H2C it is, I could have made do with another H2S but why not have a whole load of multi colour ability.
I do see adding a third printer for the next batch (first is 200 parts, second will hopefully be 300+) at that point I will need to consider if another C or S is the right way to go.

Melting plastic releases "stuff".....even if you cannot smell it.
Having one machine occasional use is o.k. but running 2 of them constantly
is another.

Remembering of course, it's not just multicolour but also multi material. Great for having a second reel to swap over to at the end of a reel and also for specialist support materials or TPU etc. which you may wish to print in place.

It’s a good point mate. If I had two H2C’s or an H2D instead of the S I would be using a different support material.

Had a little sort out and move around this afternoon.
Trying to get ready to start the production run which will probably be at the end of the week, get Xmas dinner out the way first.
Had to purchase a Creality drier so I can pre-dry the ABS spools.
Just got a 20KGs delivery from Bambu and stacked the gray up in the corner next to the drier.

ABS?

The fumes from ABS are toxic and seriously dangerous in a small space. Plus it will stink the house out. Opening a window won't cut it. You're going to need extraction. I have had a lot of success with "Blue Peter" style (or Heath Robinson) extractor ducting made from lightweight foam panels cellotaped together.

Then of course there's a fire risk....

Maybe stick to being adventurous.

The H series does have internal filtering and is built to maintain the required heat.
I have run day long prints with ABS for multiple days, that whilst there is some detectable smell, it’s never pervaded into the rest of the house. If it gets out of hand then I will install some extraction.

I don't know what nasties these materials put in the air but an air quality meter might be a first step before extraction.
I've got a cheapo that measures CO, CO2, HCHO, also providing AQI and TVOC - mines probably as accurate as a scud missile but it is an indication of rising air contamination.

Was really surprised after coating some wood oil how high the readings got compared to obvious stuff like testing a 2 stroke in an enclosed space!

Those meters (we use them at work) just tell you if your going to die within 5 minutes or so.

Do a little reading on BPA additive, it's everywhere in all sorts of plastics.
It's an endocrine disruptor.

There are thousands of other chemicals in plastics, not many will give you any warning ahead of time, you'll just find that in 5 years or so that you have cancer or some other debilitating disease, from accumulating small amounts over time.

Besides which, the risks of printing ABS are totally overblown. The smell whilst printing is only just detectable and those who are paranoid are probably smokers anyway. An extraction system is gross overkill in my opinion, if it bothers you, print in the garage or open a window.

The recommendation from Bambu for printing ABS is “try not to sleep in the same room” lol.
I think walking into the printing room for 10-20 mins per day for change over is going to be fine.
Baring in mind that it is a closed room with an open window.
There’s a lot of paranoia around printing with ABS and ASA but not a lot of evidence of an issue. Plenty of people seem fine with it.
It may be a surprise but I have actually done a bit of research into the precautions and effects and I am a grown man who can make my own risk / benefit analysis.

As said above, I don’t smoke or drink, two very dangerous pastimes that people don’t have anywhere near as much problem with as warming up a bit of plastic (not burning btw ).

Please stop with the doom and gloom, it’s a complete waste of time.
