Issue with clarke angle grinder

My new (and first ever) angle grinder arrived yesterday. Clarke thingy... used it for a few mins this morning to chop through the pipework on my bike exhaust. Got about a quarter of the way into the job and noticed the cutting blade was spinning slightly loose. I checked and tried to tighten the bolt/retaining nut type fasterner - it was as tight on as possible but the blade was still slightly loose enough to move against the drive mechanism...

am I doing something wrong? is there something like a washer missing?

the nut needs to be flat side onto the disc, if your using a cutting disc. the other side will have a shoulder on it near the thread, so won't go tight onto disc.

or the washer under the disc , which has a slot machined into it, is not located on the corresponding bit on the shaft properly. hope this helps.

The design of the nuts varies from make to make. Some dont quite close enough to use the very thin discs. You may need to make a washer from some thin card, just enough to space it out so it tightens down.
Some disc are supplied with them if you buy a box.

had a reply from another guy on the haynes roadster forums and the 2nd reply on here from wyn both correspond - I assumed the step/shoulder on the fastener slotted into the middle of the disc (metal cutting disc in this case) but I should have had it on the other way round... there was no mention of it in the manual but atleast I know my grinders not nackered! thanks guys!

My first angle grinder was Clarke,it sounded as rough as a bear's behind when it was running and eventually the alloy bevel gear housing burst.

brand alliance, not what it's cracked upto be

i've got a couple of other bits by clarke (a driver and a heat gun) and found them to be good so I went with them on the grinder side of things... I'll see how I get on but I guess it's good to find your feet in tool land I'll report back if i have any trouble & thanks for the replies
