Ditto as Zx9, Maplins, couldn't even get hold of Methylated spirits at my local chemist.
They all suspect some nefarious purpose, mind you I did ask for a cold one from the fridge.
Fortunately my local branch of Wilkinson's came up trumps.

Surgical spirit may be isopropanol. Also known as propan-2-ol.

Over here in Oz we can get any qty of metho from dozens of places, so I would imagine it would be the same where you are. Try paint stores, supermarkets, hardware stores ect. I just picked up a 4lt bottle of metho from my local SuperCheap auto accessory store, Isopropyl is a bit scarcer, but try laboratory supply stores as it's used for sterilizing medical equipment and lab benches.

If your really desperate u could try a sighn writters they sometimes use it

Meths is expensive, Surgical Spirit is cheaper and doesnt (imo) smell so bad, or linger so long.

You can get Acetone in the pound shops sold as nail varnish remover, be careful it doesnt contain conditioner.
