I don't do enough welding to justify a proper welding table, but sometimes I just need a flat surface to keep whatever I'm welding true. I was wondering if buying an offcut of granite is a good idea as a welding surface?
No, it cracks/powders up.
Does not last long as a welding surface.
It's ok if you can get offcuts out of the skip but I wouldn't pay money for a piece to weld on
its just like concrete ,,, I got a bit of gravestone given at one point ,,, as handy as it was ,, it didnt work.
but it did stop the door blowing closed in the breeze in the summer ,, it was just too nice to throw away.
I was considering the same, but at work I use 2mm steel, and silicone rated to 1200°c
I had wondered about bonding steel to granite with the silicone hoping the steel would stay flat, the granite wouldn't get too hot, and the silicone will hold.
I have all the stuff kicking around, I may try it one day although I picked up a radiator to use recently.
