is tthis joint overhead position

if a welded joint is physically below you (or you have to bend over to get at it) but you have to hold the torch so the swan neck and shroud are pointing up wards to make a lap joint, with the weld travelling left-right, not up-down, would this be classed as overhead as the weld is above the torch?

I can't picture exactly what you are describing but i have always looked at it from a gravity point of view.
So if the weld was to melt and the top drops through the joint to the bottom then downhand but if it was to melt and the top was to drop off before passing through the bottom of the joint its overhead. (that all made so much more sense before i tried to write it.)

imagine a bit of flat bar sticking up from the floor, with an angle iron tab on it, with one leg pointing down and the other leg pointing towards you...say you wanted to weld the lap joint underneath the angle iron but you had no way to do it but to lean in from above and weld it with your body above the weld, but your torch obviously underneath the weld at the relevant angle

That's what i thought but didn't sound like the description.

It was this bit that confused me,

yes, thats the sort of thing i was wondering...when welding my shelves up i leant in from the top to weld a load of tabs on and decided to run the bottom welds as well and wondered if it was overhead or not lol

Yes that is overhead. It's nothing to do with where you have to be positioned but the type/layout of the joint regardless of actual height.

Anyway, to a dwarf it could still be over their head

thats what i thought...

so with that...i guess i can weld overhead too now haha. welds arent the best but hey, im not a pro and this is just a shelf for a rage saw...

this is from below the weld, but was welded as in my diagram...not the best, but certainly strong enough for my needs
