Is tig stronger than mig?

had a conversation with a time served tig welder tonight and to be honest he peed me off a bit

reckons you cannot be coded in mig because it is a substandard method of welding and that tig is far stronger method of joining 2 pieces of metal and mig is just for muppets who cannot manage tig!!!!

It's the rather old argument that welders like to get everyone excited (and bored) with. Each process has it's place, and is best suited to certain materials/processes/environments.

Agrees with Paul, to many factors dictate what process to weld a specific job. Obviously the more processes a welder can use gives him/her better job prospects.

your time served TIG welder is wrong, of course you can be coded for MIG welding, as you can be coded for any sort of welding, be it gas welding or even electron beam welding! As regards which is stronger, well, most any type of weld metal will be 'stronger' than the parent metal being welded! I have come across many so called TIG expert welder's who can't even stick two pieces of flat bar together with MIG! However, it is generally accepted that good TIG welding requires more skill level than good MIG welding. On the other hand, I see it like this, a bad MIG welder can make far more of a disaster than a bad TIG welder can, whereas, a good MIG welder can make a better job than a poor TIG welder! If that makes any sense at all let me know!!

MIG can be prone to lack of side wall fusion, so it is often classed (by some) as semi-skilled welding. TIG (in the right hands) is less likely to produce defects and as it uses a totally inert gas it produces a "cleaner" weld.

I would say TIG is the superior process and like for like it will produce stronger welds, but it depends on the plate being welded, the filler being used and the man holding the torch.

If it was Aluminium I would say AC TIG is far better than MIG.

Technically with tig you have more control over the heat / penetration and filler, but a mig set up correctly should get the same results.

my point was that either way the parent metal either side of the weld is weaker than the weld anyway so it cant matter at all can it?

So, by that way of thinking, then TIG would be for muppets who can't manage MMA?

If we are talking about mild steel plates, then I think that if done correctly there is not really much difference between the 2 and tigging plates together isn't really that difficult once you get the hang of it. I mean, if MIG were so substandard, they wouldn't use it to weld cranes together, would they?. However, I have to admit that tigging pipes together (in position) can be quite a difficult process (and that's coming from a coded MAG welder).

Well If this alleged time served guy did say that then really its naive and ignorant. He is wrong on nearly all counts.

First as a forum member has already mentioned, the weld is in nearly all cases stronger than the parent metal. If a weld is 'sound' and a failure/ fatigue happens it will often be near the base of a weld or along the base. Reason being is the loading is to much for the parent metal. therefore 'it' fails and not the actual weld. This comes down to design flaws or fatigue and not weld flaws.

It doesn't matter if the weld is 1x or 20x stronger then the parent material, or the design its being applied to. As long as its stronger the rest of the job will fail and not the weld . What more can you say on that count ?

Its really a horses for courses situation, Use the process most suited for the job, that's what it boils down to.

On the pretence of the guys statement you could throw this back at him. Will he sit there with his tig set and make up a set of 16 foot gates? Grinding off all the scale and getting decent tight joints and spending 3 times longer welding it up, not to mention the cost. Its use the process most suited for the application.

I really wouldn't take to much notice of this guy. Plenty out there that have a job get given drawings make what they have to and go home end of story. Often the bigger picture totally bypasses these people. They are often clueless to the things that surround their jobs, They have tunneled vision and often only have the ability to see what they wish to.

I have worked with and along side many of them. Time served too and some coded and found in most cases their technical and overall knowledge desperately lacking.

The type of metal, the thickness of the metal, the quality of the welding rod, the speed at which you weld at, where it is going to be used; all play an integral part. Personally I tig weld for many jobs, as my jobs are usually small, time is not of concern, and the metals are iron, steel, and aluminum.
You know when you produce a good weld, whether you mig or tig weld, and that's the key. Yes, welds do fail. Unclean surface, poor rod quality, too fast feed, welding too hot or too cold, and many other factors lead to weld failure. I've seen samples of most all failures taken from the field. The misconception that a weld is stronger than the parent is not up for debate, as it's the welding process in itself that weakens the parent, so unless you fuse the material together, then and only then is the weld stronger than the parent.

Some of this is true some is blatantly very wrong

You cannot make broad brush statements like this...........there are so many influences.

The only true answer is that "it depends" and you need a lot more information before its possible to even guess

Well I was coded producing bucket arms and drive frames for Caterpillar Loaders,

Using Pulse arch,
If its not skilled how come my pay increased 50% once coded.............

I now work at a firm working on exhaust systems for the nuclear and oil industry and the work some of the so called tradesmen produce is truly shameful.
