Is this tarmac in my garden likely to be covering a service mains?

The area of tarmac is only about one metre Sq.

There is already a path at one side, and on the other side is a raised up drive. There were tree/bushes groing when I moved in 32 years years ago.

The house was built in 1953. Before that, the land and surrounding land were orchards.

Are the edges of the square as it was put down or do they look like it might be a leftover from something else?

Any neighbours remember?

The position seems to suggest it's in a line with the front door...so path or drive would be my guess.

thats better now i can see the lay of the land

it would have been the old tarmac path to the property with 2-3 steps down at the wall to the pathway

older style would have been flagged stone pathway with a gate at the wall with steps down to it

over the years the pathway has been adjusted

electric mains is normally covered with red clay large tile that covers over the mains wire or thats what our older style of mains wire is covered with

Could be. When using the pick on the tarmac there is a very faint smell of gas. Does Methane have any odour?Maybe not in respect to the use of budgies.

Better safe than sorry...you could call it in and get the gas company to check...then maybe they can dig it up for you

Either there is a gas leak somewhere down the road and it's tracking underground. Or more likely it is the natural smell of the soil.
Quite common especially in clay ground is a gas type odor

theres a massive hp cast iron sewerage pipe 10 foot down under my back garden lawn thats rotten. there re newing 3 miles of it and conecting it to the old before the railway il take loads of piccies along the job and post them up

When you break old asphalt it smells of gas.
