Is this Sip 100 useable?

So I have been looking to get a welder for a while but I could never find one in my price range. Anyway I bid £25 on this one not thinking about it. It went for more but I got a second chance offer a few weeks later as the buyer done a runner. So I figured £25 for the welder and an empty C02 bottle was an OK deal.

So this is what I got:

I know nothing about welding/welders so I don't know what I have got here. He claimed it works perfectly and was serviced last year. I have not been able to test as I have no gas. It turns on fine and the wire comes out OK when I press the button on the gun.

Where could I get the bottle filled in SE London? It's a C02 bottle if that makes any difference.

I could take the proverbial and say you've wasted your money but hey, what's 25 quid?? You'd spend double that on a half decent night out .
The welder looks well used and the torch connections look a bit iffy but you say the wire comes out when you press the trigger so at least it's alive. Does the machine strike an arc? That's the next test, you can check it works without having to connect up the gas though the weld will look horrible.
The gas line is well kinked, fairly easily fixed.
The wire reel should feed from the 'bottom' as it's viewed.
That small white hose is the gas line but it looks like the fitting it goes into has been removed from the regulator, probably to adapt a larger one to fit. That regulator is for disposable cylinders anyway so if using the cylinder you've got there you'll need a connection kit like this
That gas cylinder looks like a pub one so you'll just need to be nice to an appropriate landlord/lady and see if he/she will exchange it.

Don't test it before sorting the contact between the torch cable and casing - you can see where it's been arcing. There are some photos of how it should look here: http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/sip-wirefeed.htm

The wire reel looks like it is the wrong way around - should feed from the other side.

I'd clear that foul between live torch and casing, turn the reel around, hold the torch straight, attach the earth clamp to some scrap and see if it'll arc and lay weld. The welds will be very spattery and bubbly (and not strong) but it's a test before you have gas.

If it works, then a torch service kit, new liner and gas tube, new reel of wire (that one looks rusty), a CO2 regulator and adapter to the plastic gas tube ought to have it sorted. Probably going to cost atound £70 for that lot.

It's not really worth spending £70 is it?

I don't think so , put a bit more to it and buy a new Clarke MIG.
