Is this ok for heavy hobby use?

Remarkably good nick. For some strange reason the previous owner had painted it and made a bit of a mess in places but everything works a treat. I haven't actually tried the quill feed but don't really see the need.

We've got a slightly older version of what Snowy was suggesting which I was planning on weighing in for scrap. It's 3 ph and belt driven but still goes and is unlikely to break if anyone's interested?

Haha. Yeah I was quite chuffed with the deal myself. Not good to hear yours is in a bad way. Didn't think there was much to go wrong with them tbh!

On drills, I also knew of somewhere selling a Solberga geared head one for around 400 notes. They're Swedish and I have no idea of parts availability or anything like that but I could point you in the direction if you're interested, Mick?

You could add Startrite to the list of second hand options. Keep your eye out for a geared head model although they don't come up on eBay too often.

Think that's what I got, floor standing model, 10 speed, 5 on the belt and a slow/fast lever on the quill?

Not for the market it’s aimed at (model engineers making small steam engines)
But it probably is for you ! max drill 1/2", power less than the M.M. drill we started with

What do you want to the machine to do
how often will it be used
what size holes do you want to make
how big are the lumps you want to drill

It would be used on a daily basis as a drill and very occasionaly as a mill, the maximum size of material it would be used on would be 2" box section or 6mm plate.

I can't see me using it to drill holes > 13mm apart from a hole saw now and again and the mill facility would only be used for creating a slot once in a while.

I would have thought it would be ideal. Not sure about the power as I don't know what a pillar drill of comparable size would have, engine wise. It has variable speed with a high and low ratio so much easier to change speeds than pulling bands. I bought a mill instead of a pillar drill since I managed to get one for such a reasonable price. It's already been used in it's milling capacity several times so I'm glad I went for it.

A model engineer friend has a small mill similar to that one and also a mini lathe and to be honest model engineering is about their limit, they have very limited power, I bought one of these when the motor failed on my antique startrite drill, and its not been a bad tool, as said earlier the column got filled with postcrete, that was really to beef it up to be used with a cross slide vice for light milling, Its in daily use, (and abuse), today its drilled 100 holes 20mm dia through 8 mm stainless steel, must get that startrite repaired though.

Try This a bit bigger, & 50% more power than the axminster, should be fine for light milling. But emember these Chinese imports are "Hobby machines"

As your main use is drilling, get a proper drill as mentioned in this thread, when you want to mill a slot, use one of these
