I don't like to "show my hand" too early in case it encourages bidding.
i bid as late as i can but sometimes i need to go out so put my maximum bid in and see

If I see something I like and it has no bids I usually put a low bid on. My theory is if anyone else is watching it thinking they are going to get it for nothing it might put them off, but if they are serious they will outbid me anyway.

Sounds like a plan to me
I bid as late as possible but if it's something I'm not fussed about just put a daft low bid on before I go out and check when I get back home
... and always add a few odd pence on the end - it might just be enough
Other tips from folk who know
- Don't look for bargains at a weekend - everybody is looking then
- Check for items finishing at unusual times (you can search by ending time)
- look for "pickup only" items near you, there very little competition as folk outside the area can't bid on them

Brings back fond childhood memories of 50+ years ago
Dad was an engineer building large gas and oil engines, and was a bit of a rum b***er, as all engineers appear to be, me and the inhabitants of this forum are no exception
Anyway, as soon as he said, " don't tell your mother " we knew we were in for some fun.
He had access to copious quantities of aluminium, iron, brass, copper filings from the various ' fettling' shops, he also knew how to make gunpowder.
You can guess the rest, home made fireworks.
As kids my brother and I thought we could also do it but where to get the materials ? ally grindings no problem, dad always had some knocking about, it was the gunpowder stuff that presented a problem.
Soon solved, a trip to the local art shop, then on to the pet shop, then on to the chemist where the excuse was that it was for curing rabbit skins
A bit of mixing then off to the fields with an Ostemilk tin packed full of the stuff.
As the saying goes ' light blue touch paper then retreat '.
In our case it was run like the wind, once it started and the ally started to burn it lit up the whole hillside, looking like a crashed aeroplane

Sounds fun Ducati! I used to do similar as a child but now kids end up on terrorist charges for even thinking about it! I call it science and I think it's healthy as long as you are safe. I am surprised I've got hands left to be honest, but it taught me a lot!

We used to save fireworks and empty their contents into aerosol cans. They gave a much better display than the shop bought ones.
A friend and myself decided we would design a jet engine, this involved boiling petrol in a tin with a hole pierced in the top and lighting the "steam".

Nice! How about an air rifle and a candle next to a can of cheap hairspray! Fantastic ball of flames, but a bit too much shrapnel to recommend trying!

True, but there's also fellows like you and me out there who are pushing kids to learn through thoughtful experiments. This book, Fifty Dangerous Things (you should let your children do0 is a worthy read and I think that kids who are shown cool experiments (cool because they're dangerous) have a fantastic time, learn more and learn to push the rules.

the gas/no gas welder is one thing and he is also selling the gas setup (meaning what you can see in the picture) which i would suggest is a propane bottle with a gas brazing torch attached
