I've been looking for an excuse for a while, bits of aluminium and SS welding comes up from time to time, fortunately @Shox Dr comes to the rescue. But I do want to learn how to TIG and I can't buy the product I want off the shelf, and made to order is about £350.
I've had a couple of these millstone grit post installed on the driveway recently to replace the wooden posts. I'm in the process of getting the oak together to make the gate as I want something a bit different and I like working in oak.
With oak, its usual to use SS hinges as the tannins react with other metals causing discolouration of oak and ironwork. You can get SS hinges off the shelf, about £150 a pair but they are designed for wooden posts.
The plate is much too small, I would be using SS threaded rod, resin and SS dome nuts, the plate needs to be a lot wider. I may also design it slightly different and incorporate some antitheft, we usually put the top hinge upside down to stop people just lifting gates off and nicking them but a nice new oak gate may need a bit more of a deterrent. It will take me a while to build the gates, so I'm in no immediate rush, so can practise on a few bits of scrap first. There is a guy nearby who I can probably get around to show me the basics, were in the same working men's club and he has a small fab shop at the bottom of our hill.
So, a half decent AC/DC TIG for occasional use. I don't want to buy rubbish but Lincoln/Lorch etc. is likely to be out of my price range.
List of potential candidates so far, all around the 200 amp range
Paton ProTIG 200 £1,097 inc VAT at the moment, I can't see a pedal control port on it though, it may be hiding, 3 year warranty
R-Tech 210 AC/DC/TIG £1378 inc VAT, 3 year collect/return warranty, I'll take a look at @doubleboost vids as I think this is similar to what he has, also known for good service and can extend warranty to 5 years for about 190 quid
Jasic AC/DC TIG 202D £1426 inc VAT 5 year extended warranty - but how good is the warranty?
I haven't compared features yet, not sure I would be sufficiently knowledgeable to be able to decide which features are more desirable than others. I guess the ability to store a few jobs, types of waveforms, types of start, post/pre purge etc. etc.
Any other circa 200A AC/DC TIG in a similar price bracket I should consider? The Rtech is my current preferred option until somebody corrects me
I could just farm it out the guy at the bottom of the hill, but with retirement looming, if I don't buy a TIG now, it may never get bought.
