Wilkinson (Same as the razors, swords and files) make some really nice ones for cutting composite fibres (Carbon fibres and Kevlar for example). I'd dread to think what they cost though.

According to Adam Savage, paper is one of the worst things * for scissors as there are tiny abrasive particles in it (silica, clay, etc) which will dull the blade fairly quickly. I don't know if this is exactly true however.

*Obviously things like rocks and steel plate are much worse.

Pretty good general purpose scissors are sold under the Wolf garden tool brand.
Don't get me going about mobile phones ; used to have reps calling on me then start taking calls on their mobiles .
Now in "retirement" I employed a father and adult son to do some building work and the son spent about fifteen minutes out of every hour on his phone!
We used to get on quite well without them!

They're the Wilkinson ones I was talking about, I would guess William Whitley bought them out. These are the ones dad has (or at least they look like them), "Wilkinson "Composite"" is written on the blade which is where my confusion came from.

In our industry we are flooded with male and female apprentices.I am that old guy that is 63 years old and I take it a pleasure to pass on my skills to these up to date computer wiz kids.I can remember when I was a spotty apprentice and I was introduced to a guy that was my age now and I thought"look at that old fart".Now I am that old fart

Some of the guys forget they where once young and there attitude puts the young off. Everybody has knowledge to share regardless of age. The young learn from the experienced but the experienced can learn a lit from the youth. We have intelligent youth even tho school standards have dropped they still learn no matter what the daily mail says.

As decent scissors these days, or just the usual Chinese crap that won't cut fresh air?

Fiskar make reall top quality quality scissors ... Our house pair must be over 24 old ,.

A couple of times I've run a slip stone over the micro serrations at the same blade angle just to perk up the edges of the serrations and faced the sides of the blades after with a the same slip stone.
Currently costing between £18 to £35 a pair I consider they are about the best we've ever had in 35 yrs of being a family that has two big grown up kids and one very arty 13 yr old who has used them ever since she could get her hand inside the handles .

This includes the 13 yr old Munchkin cutting off almost all her waist length pure blonde hair off one side of her head when she was just turned four .
My lass had a big wailing sobbing session , so did the hair dresser who'd snipped the ends a few days earlier . Munchkin ended up with a sort of short back & sides cum urchin cut once the hair dresser composed herself & Alison.

quote elf and safe key side of employers responsibilities .... it's too much of a distraction to have them on as they could go off and make the apprentice have a serious accident........ like getting caught up in moving machinery machinery ( even if you have to throw the bugger into it ) or getting run over .. ( it's a bit difficult if your a railway train driver ).

I know how you both feel and I agree. But if we kick their arses off they go crying to their coordinator and WE get our arses kicked

Been there many times .
I got suspended for three weeks for threatening " Put him down for a long time " if he didn't , " Back off and put the chisel down " .
He reckoned I was going to get vented as well ,he was 2 mtrs 10 tall & built like a brick karzie . The Richard Cranium had a 1/2 " morticing chisel & was trying to mortice one of the other " students ".
He bottled it when I took a flying run onto one of the work benches and kicked the chisel out of his hand neatly catching his arm and putting him on the floor in a very painful back hammer with 13 stone in the middle of his back .

All he got from the head honcho of the scheme was being told not to be so naughty .
On a good note all the other 30 or so students suddenly woke up & started to toe the line & thankfully numpty stopped attending the scheme.
