I've recently been doing some desoldering, and its only as a last resort, and that was mainly removing wires from radio control equipment, so I could reuse the circuit boards. if you're trying to use things like resistors or capacitors the wire legs end up being very short so you'll need to solder some wires on to reuse them. I use braid (and flux) rather than a solder sucker. when I decided that I wanted to dabble in electronics years ago I just ordered a range of components in multiples of ten, put then in small bags and store then in a cuttlery holder and replenish as you use them. also with old components you may be very lucky to find values that you want.
my last bit of desoldering was to remove the USB connectors from a USB power meter and to replace in with wires so I can see the current draw and voltage together with Lipo batteries
