In my experience the benefit of being a manager is in being able to get things done the way you want, after having seen plenty bad management in the past I get satisfaction from doing things better.
I'm in the position that I do work long hours when at work, but as I work offshore, it doesn't affect my home life any more than straight 12-hour shifts would as I'm away from home anyway.
In some industries the step up to manager does incur a lot more benefits than 20%. But I never bring work home with me, and I switch it right off when I leave the site.
