It's a cultural thing. A bit like if you leave a tip in a restaurant in China, they'll be mightily offended. If you forget to leave a tip in the US, you'll get glared out of the establishment, or worse!

It's a pet hate of mine...leaving an add running after it's been sold.To be fair, I've messaged plenty of people on FB marketplace asking "Is it still available?" to be told. "No sorry".
So I can't really see the issue in confirming, I’d suggest it is set up as a default question for a reason.
I've actually just bought an item of fb from a lady (nice enough) who listed two available. I said I'd take both. She replied she now only had one…
I bought it anyway and she did update the listing to say it had been sold, although she still has a listing for both available on what is clearly a duplicate account under the same name.
Some people are just not all that clued up, so it does no harm to check if it is actually still available before you waste too much time.
However, I do tend to put a bit more into the initial message than just that, including asking when it is convenient to collect - so the seller knows I am at least half serious.
There are a lot of time wasters about, both buyers and sellers. Unfortunately, it comes with the territory.
Edit: it's even worse than it seems as it would be easy for Facebook to automate a message after 2 weeks that invited the poster to renew the advert. If it wasn't renewed it was sold or the poster was not bothered selling it.

I've noticed a couple of folk recently - they advertise stuff ( a decent air compressor and a bike that would be a fun winter project), for both I sent a polite "Is it still for sale? When can I come and see / buy it?" message.
Both replied with the same unhelpful "Yes it's still for sale" message, no info about when I could view the item.
For the compressor I gave up after sending 4 messages asking when I could come to look at it.
Buying the project bike is ongoing but I'm at the stage of giving it up as a bad job and letting him keep it if he won't let me turn up and buy it ...
