Is it possible to obtain an olive, in any material that will fit on a 16mm tube?

My elderly relative has a £150 shopping trolly. I know, I didn't know RR had started making them

The frame is thin tubuler steel. The handle is too. However, the handle connects to the frame with something like a plastic ferule & short length threaded plast tube. There is the male external threaded plastic on the trolly, and the internally threaded female threaded plastic connector on the handle side that screws on to the male part on the frame. The plastic is the 'week link' and the handle has snapped off at that point.

I want to make a stronger fix. If the tube was 15mm I could use a brass olive with a compression fitting.

If not, epoxy a tube inside or outside. Or as this is a welding forum, TIG weld it with some extra gusseting for strength.

The handle does NOT need to be removed. Can you expand on that method please. The frame tubing and the handle are both 16mm dia. Do you mean epoxy a short piece of 15mm copper tube betwen handle and frame?

A piece of tube, copper wouldn't be my choice, stainless or alloy maybe inserted 50mm inside the tubes with epoxy, araldite extra strong, not the quick drying stuff, will be ok. Or similar on the outside of the tubes. I dare say a piece of whittled down hardwood inserted inside would also suffice.

yeah they will be metal. they might just about fit a 15mm compression fitting, if it was something I was working on, I'd just buy a couple off ebay etc and try them, but that would also depend on the chamfer on the other nut and other part of the fitting

I've just looked at the pics again, if the handle slides inside the frame, then do away with the plastics and epoxy the handle inside the frame.

The imperial ones are generally used for HVAC (air conditioning) stuff. They will be metal. If it is too big for the compression fitting, just run around the fitting with a small sanding drum on a drill to open out the taper - it does not need to seal. You might have to reduce the outside of the olive so it goes inside the nut. You can use the same sanding drum to open out the compression nut slightly.

You might be able to take a standard 15mm copper olive, heat it up red hot and open it out by driving over a tapered piece of metal (you could taper a 16mm bar with just a file and sandpaper).

What are you to do on the trolley end? The tube there is even bigger. Maybe a 22mm to 15mm compression coupling and shims.

Anything like my mum, with no technical ability to cope with smart phones, computers, the internet, lack of mobility (hence the need for a trolley) and not wishing to burden relatives with requests for assistance, then the only source you have for such things are the adverts in the back of any magazines you buy/subscribe to, in newspapers, which then lead to many varieties of catalogues of "useful" items, gifts, etc, turning up through the letter box.

And when flicking through, you spot something you think might be useful . . . and you've bought a 150 trolley . . .

I have to regularly sort through my mum's collection of catalogues of over-priced tat - and it still does stop her buying me gifts such as the useless book of automotive facts she thought I might want . . .

so maybe not more money than sense, just no way to assess it relative to the rest of the world.

you can pay through the nose for anything if your fool enough , only need to look at land rover prices to know this

Maybe I was a little harsh saying what I did, for which I apologise. Problem is, there are always people that for want of a better word, 'pray' on older people.

The photos in my first post could probably be better. All the tubing on the trolley including the handle is 16mm. The handle almost butts up to the tube on the trolley frame, but it only slides in to the plastic bits in the photo. Thus, a weak area is created by using plastic between the two metal tubes. When that trolley is full of tins or whatever shopping, and it is lifted up by the handle to go on the train for example (and he asks for help from fellow passengers for that), the 'plastic joint is simply not fit for purpose.

At £150 it is shamful, but like bricol quite rightly points out in post No 16, the elderly or infirm etc are targeted with brochures of tac.
