Is it a bad idea to buy a used gas bottle?

did a spread sheet of all the different cost, haven't checked the figures for 8 months so may need updating.

The barcodes are not on the bottles.
They are on the handle/collar.
Look at the collar and you'll see a socket cap bolt...

haven't seen BOC bottle in over 12 months, just remember hearing about the traceability.
PS just been to look at a Size "Y" that hiding in the back of the work shop "Long Story"and it has a green plastic collar, with another white collar over that, then the handle!

You need an active boc account with a bottle registered.
If you can 'find' another bottle the same you can use it as a spare.

the initial rental is a rip off so no need to work it out

Got a Y size here too. Dropped off the rental radar some years ago. Cant done anything with it except make something else from it or use it as an anvil.

BOC and others must lose a fortune this way. I would like to know how much these things cost to them.

well callor have lost millions in lost bottles due to there greed .i see many boc acetylene and oxygen bottles lying around and on farms and places if they gave you a few quid for handing them in they would save a fortune but greed takes over with them

I've also got a BOC one that I was given years ago, can't get refilled, can't off load it at the local tip and pretty much can't give away.
If anyone near Ballymena in Co.Antrim has a BOC account they are welcome to it!

A few years ago I bought a load of welding cable from a guy who was clearing out a shed.
I saw a set of oxy/acet bottles in the corner on a trolley but no welding hoses. I enquired and bought the trolley for very little and got the bottles for free.
The bottles were empty so I flogged them for £80 and kept the trolley.

Indeed they are, and they can be swapped! Ask me how I know. Actually don't, but you can probably guess

For all those with a BOC bottle kicking around, maybe you could find someone who also has one on account but with plenty of gas in it (lots of low volume users here!) and wants to stop paying rental. Just saying.

Because you need the original paperwork to get the deposit back.

I've got a hobbyweld bottle.
I know I have the invoices somewhere.

If i can 'sell' a bottle for £100 then it's not worth spending a couple of hours looking for the invoices plus an hour taking it back for an extra £30.

I'm not going to let it go for £50 though as it's worth sorting out the office for £100

Hence why you don't see them going cheap very often

Wouldn't the new owner need paperwork to get it refilled (swapped for full)? I've not yet had to refill my SGS but the dealer made a point of saying that I should hold onto the receipt, but that they could look me up by postcode as well.

If you know someone in the south of Ireland, there are certain places that will give you a full one for turning in the empty.
They are not supposed to, but needs must, aparantly barcodes get unreadable.

With BOC the rental statrs when you fill the bottle and ends when you return it or if you
refill it the rental continues. You can return it empty and the rental stops until you call in
for another bottle.

That's the only good thing about needing the original paperwork to reclaim the deposit.

Not in my experience.
You just need an empty bottle the same brand and type.

I have local motor factors, they make you bring the empty to the load bay door and check it before they will do anything else.
After that you can pay cash and walk out.

The local hire center only take card and you have to have an account but they'll sell you the bottle then give you the key for the cage to swap over yourself.

I've also been into various other places and also sent bottles off with others (and the same in reverse) and never had any problems swapping like-for-like.

yea its a big help if you pay for it
