Is anyone familiar with Hairpin alternators?

I've been browsing alternator solutions for my buggy as I managed to break my existing alternator. And I came across Denso Hairpin series which use different windings and can generate most of their output even at idle. Could be very useful with a winch. But they seem to be uncommon outside of N. America.

Has anyone got any insight into these?

Hello, no insight at all, but have you tried Wosp? They can make bespoke alternators.

I do not know the answer to this, but when 4x4 people use their winches, is it normal or expected to do so with the engine at idle? Or do they have some means of increasing the revs. just a little ?

It is very different to an electric winch, but a lot of Landrovers with mechanical capstan winches had hand throttles adjacent the capstan drum.

Better off with a second battery and a split charging system, much kinder to the alternator.

How much engine power does that take to drive the alternator !

I've never bothered with them as too expensive, etc for what I want.
Hand throttle to raise the revs is my solution.

I thought of that and will add an idle up switch. There's an idle up terminal at the ECU used to increase engine speed when the power steering is strained, all I need to do is add a switch to that terminal.

I realise this may be feature creep, but if you only use the idle up in conjunction with the winch, maybe have it somehow tied into the winch controller (or winch isolator) so it can be done either remotely or automatically when the winch is enabled.

I did think of that as well, I added a winch isolator switch for safety, I could wire the idle up to that.
