As Malcolm suggested on another thread, I'm posting a question here.
I like to "tinker" around with stuff and don't want to commit to buying a professional outfit at this stage. What I'd like to do is spend some money on a welder for tinkering around with, nothing fancy and it has to be low maintenance and easy to use. I'm not planning to weld thin sheet steel or do any automotive work, just muck around with smallish lumps of steel (hobby only).
The reason I thought of arc welders is that I thought they were cheaper to buy and to run, not having to buy gas, just electrodes, etc. I recently had some experience with the 40 quid Aldi "buzz box" specials and wasn't impressed. Cheap, nasty and crap build quality (sorry GeorgeB, but they are).
Any constructive advice is welcome.
