Ipad V Hubl2

Just thought I would gather some views from those who have or are in the know re tablets:

Xmas is coming and I am considering a tablet for my better half and perhaps even one for myself, we do have a cheap Android thingy bought from ebay and it is sort of ok but a bit slow, a bit small and poor battery life, it cost around £50 and you get what you pay for at that price and from eBay's Chinese department.

My initial plan now the new Ipad release has dropped the ipad air to around £300 was to buy one of those, had sort of made the final decision to go for that... BUT, Tesco have brought out the Hudl2 for £119 which appears to be getting rave reviews, slightly smaller screen but big difference in price, can take SD cards to increase memory and runs off Google Android so perhaps even more free apps.

So folks, any advice, views, comments from anyone who knows more than me about them (that's easy to achieve) would be appreciated.

Suppose it's a bit like asking what MIG should I get and the answer would be the more you spend, usually the better you get, but is it the same in this instance.

What I don't want every time I fire the tablet up is Tesco ads telling me beans are on special offer, apparently it has a Tesco home page with various shopping links.

Two Hudl2's with change for less than one Ipad is tempting, even though I suspect the Ipad is the Rolls Royce of the two, is there actually enough difference for a non serious user to warrant it.

The problem you face is that there are two camps, one who love the Android platforms and the others (guilty) who love the Apple platform. In truth, there is no best, just the one that suits your use and budget. Sadly, it does provoke a lot of silly little boys who criticise and disparage the other platform, worse in some way than football hooliganism.

What do you actually want to do with the tablet? Do you want compatibilty with other devices you have in the household? Are there any specific apps that you would like to be able to run? What is your top budget and do you mind second hand?

i have owned both and can honestly say that with apple you are paying for a brand name, not to mention the headache that is I tunes.......

android is as quick and smooth as ios but from a practical point of veiw does as you mentioned have hundreds of apps that are free, i currently use a samsung tablet with a plug in adapter for usb memory sticks and it plays movies and videos as smooth as silk with no buffering.

I was given a Hudl last Christmas and it's been great for me. I use it for email, online shopping, banking,Ebay, bus and train tracking etc and it works fine. The Tesco apps are not obtrusive and you can get rid of them if you want to. It might be a little slow for gaming but the only game I play is Cribbage Pro. When I fly long haul I load films and music DVDs on to micro SD cards that slot into the Hudl. I am collecting a Hudle2 this afternoon and can then use my Hudl 1 as a touch screen interface for the DRO's on my mill, utilising the superb free app that's available.
Two Hudl 2s or one Ipad would be a no brainer for me.

I bought Dearly Beloved a Hudl last year and, apart from Littl'un marmalising the charging USB, it has been no trouble at all. You can get rid of the Tesco adverts. We play movies through its' HDMI using an SDcard and VLC. It is 720p so the higher resolution 1080p does not work cleanly, but perfectly acceptable on a 42" plasma.

Spot on folks and thanks a lot for the comments.

I know the Ipad is lovely to use, Grandaughter has one but Son in law did mention he prefers his Nexus which is Android I think.

Budget luckily is not an issue but as mentioned there is a big difference between £600 and £200 (Tesco discount) for a pair of tablets.

Perry: Would really appreciate some feedback on your Hudl2 purchase today if you don't mind, from my reading the Hudl1 was excellent but the Hudl 2 beats it, especially on the improved screen display so a new owner review would be very welcome.

Looks like I will probably be going down the Hudl route, I think I had just about decided that but your comments have helped a lot, no negatives so that's a good sign.

I don't want skinheads hammering the door in .... but I get what you mean, people can be very supportive of their own preferences, that's why I asked on this forum, it's a good bunch of members who generally are open minded and provide sensible advice.

Compatibility won't be an issue so that leaves me open to options, not keen on second hand either so have eliminated that option.

I think I would be happy to spend big money if I was going to be a serious user but that's not me... bit of surfing youtube, ebay, some annoying games, sky news ..that sort of thing

One thing I don't like about my Android tablet is that I can't get rid of Google apps I don't need, such as Hangouts. Go for one with loads of RAM.

iTunes is the big killer for me, I just love the way it constantly lost my details every time I wanted to updae or sync my iphone.. been on android for years now with no loss

iTunes is not their finest offering, agreed. However, it does do the job, if a little slowly at times.

While I like Apple gear,I cannot bring myself to spend the money.

I bought a TAB10.1 two yrs ago for xmas, HID uses it more than me, I bought an aftermarket USB k/board for it but its crap.

I use it for watching MotoGP via my mates BT acc, tin of beer and off to the workshop

If I was to buy again it would need it's own K/board

So I'm in the Android camp. (along with Samsung TV and Phones)

Well that's it.. the deed is done and my new Hudl2 will be sitting in Tescos for collection tomorrow, considering Xmas is coming and a tablet may be on some members lists, I will add a review here in a couple of days if anyone wishes.

I got a Samsung 7" tablet two years ago and love it. Screen on an iPad is slightly better but I think the android system is better. My youngest passed on her iPod touch to me when she got the latest version. What a pile of poo it is. Sound quality no better than my £20 10 year old Sandisk. We have Spotify but it can't get a consistent WiFi signal unless you are on top of the router. Unlike our non Apple tablets and phones where it works fine all over the house.

Apple products look great, but very much a triumph of style over content in my experience. Looking forward to a full review of the Hudl 2.

Interested in the DRO interface. Perhaps a new thread though
